It's Never Too Early...

It’s been less than 11 month since he was elected to his fifth-consecutive term in office, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is already soliciting more funds for another campaign.
In a letter Arpaio sent to supporters last week, the sheriff painstakingly lays out the vast left-wing conspiracy working against him - name dropping Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ACORN along with a few media outlets - and says he’s in need of financial support to fight these forces.
To reiterate the threat Sharpton poses (he’s visited Phoenix twice this year ...

Rep. Jeff Flake to Seniors: Screw you Grandma and Grandpa!

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The White House has announced a plan to give seniors and disabled veterans $250 each as part of a mini-economic stimulus plan to compensate them for the fact that there will be no cost of living adjustment (COLA) this year to Social Security benefits because there has been no inflation this past year. White House urges a 2nd $250 payout to seniors, veterans:

The money would go to all Social Security beneficiaries, regardless of their income, as well as disabled veterans, those eligible for railroad retirement payments and people who receive federal and state government pensions instead of Social Security.

I Know You Are, But What Am I?

When I came home Monday night I found the following message on my answering machine:
THIS IS A VOTER ALERT!

Our councilman, Sal DiCiccio, is being attacked in a smear campaign by a desperate opponent who is calling in BIG Las Vegas political money to back her struggling campaign.  This is what you and I hate about politics.  Get ready for the lies and the dirt!  Phoenix deserves better than that and that's why your neighbors support Sal DiCiccio.  You will receive your ballot in the mail this week.  Please join your neighbors and send your ballot in early for Sal DiCiccio.

(This message paid for by DiCiccio for City Council.

Symington endorsing Munger for governor

And the first heavyweight political endorsement of Arizona's 2010 campaign season goes to ... John Munger.
Munger, a Tucson attorney and former chairman of the state Republican Party, is slated to accept the endorsement of former Gov. Fife Symington this evening. Look for Symington to toss his support to Munger during a press conference that begins at 5:30 p.m. at the University Club, in Phoenix.
Symington's endorsement gives an early boost to Munger, who filed papers for his gubernatorial run late last week, and ends speculation that Symington himself may enter the race.
Those ambitions may have been tempered by recent polling ...

The Farley Report for October 6, 2009

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Here is an abbreviated version of Rep. Steve Farley's latest Farley Report (edited for state legislative issues):

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause.

* * *

There is some talk of the Governor calling us into special session again next week (that's Special Session Number 4 for those of you keeping score at home), and perhaps another after that one's done. But the call has not yet gone out.

Farley Report, Oct 6, 2009

Rep. Farley (LD28) ponders the state of the state, and it ain't great:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause. Perhaps this could finally be a good use for Sheriff Joe?

Dressing the Governor and the Legislative majority in pink stripes and locking them into Tent City could finally force an agreement of some kind. Not that I want to spend too much time thinking of the images that go with that scenario.

Water and Arizona's Future

By Karl Reiner

The water level in the Colorado River’s storage lakes has been steadily dropping, leading to the possibility that Tucson will face a water shortage in the future.  As consumers of local ground water and supplies from the Colorado, we need to start paying attention to the problem.  The combined effects of population growth, drought and global warming trends are turning the region’s water future murky.

A recent government report on climate change states that global warming has already brought about some climate modifications.  Man-made pollution composed of greenhouse gas emissions was found to be the main cause behind higher average temperatures in the Midwest.  The increased warming has extended the growing season by a week. It also caused more frequent heavy rain storms.

The report warns that these changes are only the beginning.

Matthew Ladner concedes my point

by David Safier

Goldwater's Matthew Ladner is up in Phoenix today shepherding around Jeb Bush, who is in town (brought here by G.I.) to sing the praises of the "Florida educational [not really such a] miracle" to members of the House and Senate education committees. So I doubt if I can rain on his parade.

But I want to point out that Ladner had to agree with the substance of my argument that the statistical models he used on two recent "studies" were so woefully inadequate, the results were essentially worthless. OK, he didn't go that far. But pretty close.

Background: I wrote a long-winded post,

Consternation among conservative blogs over Desert Divas client list

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Guardian (subscription required) reports "Escort client list shakes up political community." Ruh-Roh Shaggy.

At least two prominent Republicans quit an influential GOP organization this weekend because its leader has been linked to one of the state’s biggest prostitution stings.

Charles Jensen, founder of Politics on the Rocks, was one of several thousand names on a list of clients of the Desert Divas, a high-end escort service busted last year by Phoenix police.

Although Jensen denies any involvement with the prostitution ring, Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker and conservative talk-radio personality Mike Broomhead have resigned from the political group's advisory board. Parker last week announced his intentions to explore a run for governor at a meeting of the group at a Paradise Valley resort.
