Dr. Eric Novack, right-wing shill

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

When one of the Neocon Washington Post's deans of conservative apologists, George Will, sings someone's praises you know something dark and evil is afoot. It merits a closer examination of the object of his praise. (Will's columns should come with a disclosure statement).

Both of Arizona's two major newspapers The Arizona Republic and the Arizona Daily Star published the Washington Post opinion from George Will today. George F. Will - Unlawful Heath Reform?

In 2006, long before there was an Obama administration determined to impose a command-and-control federal health-care system, a young orthopedic surgeon walked into the Goldwater Institute here with an idea.

Where is the Star on the tuition tax credit issue?

by David Safier

If you live in Tucson and you want to know about the tuition tax credit/STO mess, there's currently only one place to go: my posts on BfA. The Star has been AWOL when it comes to covering the story. I don't think it would take all the fingers on one hand to count up the articles the Star has published on the topic since the story broke. Meanwhile, the East Valley Trib put together a 5 part investigative series which has received national recognition and has added much more information since then with regular, in depth reporting. The Republic is giving the Trib a run for its money, doing its own research and adding to the discussion.

Charles North, tuition tax credit expert

by David Safier

In the post below, I wrote about the recent meeting of the R-created committee looking into painting a happy face on the tuition tax credit mess. I mentioned it brought in an "expert," Charles North, to explain that tuition tax credits save Arizona millions and millions of tax dollars.

So who is this "expert," Charles North? He's an econ prof from Baylor University. About Baylor, from its website:

Baylor University in Waco, Texas, is a private Baptist university, and a nationally ranked liberal arts institution.

The only publication of note I could find by North is a book he co-authored in 2008: Good Intentions: Nine Hot Button Issues Viewed Through the Eyes of Faith.

House committee tries to whitewash tuition tax credit problems

by David Safier

The other legislative committee looking into tuition tax credits and STOs met Monday. I call it "the other committee" because it was set up by Rs as a counter to the task force set up by Ds. The D-created task force is trying to probe tuition tax credit abuses. The R-created committee is trying to paint a big ol' happy face on the whole mess.

The Monday meeting was covered by the Trib, the Republic and the Guardian (Hello, Daily Star. The meetings may be in Phoenix, but the problem is state wide).

The committee is run with an iron fist by Rick Murphy (R-Glendale).

Help for the homeless

First Transit, a private transit management and contracting business, on Tuesday donated $5,000 to the Human Services Campus, which helps around 5,000 homeless people yearly.
The money was presented to the shelter with a check presentation at the downtown Phoenix campus, attended by Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.  The money will help pay for Thanksgiving dinners and other holiday supplies, said Senior Vice President Nick Promponas in a news release.
The donation is critical to the campus' effort to help the homeless as layoffs and foreclosures push more people out of their homes. Separately, the County Board of Supervisors for years has helped fund operations ...

"Individual's right to work" vs. Students' welfare? AZ Charter Board goes with the individual, not the students.

by David Safier

I thought I would never have to blog about this one charter school principal again. But a news story from KPHO Phoenix let me know the principal, who should never have been allowed to be around students after what she did in 2005, is back in the news doing more damage at another school. Worse, the same thing could happen all over again with the same principal because of what I have to call outrageous negligence on the part of the Arizona Charter School Board.

Here's a summary of the the original story, which I posted about at length in December, 2008.

GOP insane clown posse disregards law, gets sued, costs the state money

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

First a quick update: The Accidental Governor and the GOP insane clown posse are trying for a special session this week to deal with agency funding issues. They were to have met over the weekend to hammer out the details of a plan that they hope will be a one day special session on Thursday. I checked the Governor's web page and she has not yet called for a special session, and her calendar has her going out of town this week. Things could change, but it's not looking optimistic.

There has been a troubling trend in Arizona government for years now.

Phoenix confidential

by David Safier

I don't usually blog about this kind of thing, but the Phoenix connection makes it irresistable.

There have been lots of questions about Bonner & Associates, a Republican outreach firm which apparently uses all kinds of shady tactics to do its clients' bidding. But this is a new one to me: FLS Connect.

According to Talking Points Memo,

Minnesota-based FLS Connect uses low-wage workers to make fund-raising calls for a bevy of prominent GOP clients. And many of those workers -- including those responsible for processing credit-card transactions -- have felony convictions, the former employees said.

Here's the Phoenix connection.

And many workers in the company's Phoenix office are ex-cons, who are paid not much more than minimum wage, lack benefits, and work in squalid conditions.

Maricopa County Detention Officer swipes a document from an attorney's file in court

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

This outrageous story has been circulating among Arizona trial attorneys for the past several weeks, but CNN's Rick Sanchez CNN.com - Transcripts recently shined the spotlight on a Maricopa County Detention Officer swiping a document from an attorney's file in court - right in front of the judge! (sorry, the video I found was disabled).

The reporting on this story comes from HeatCity.org in Phoenix Detention officer tries to explain why he swiped attorney's file - Heat City

A Maricopa County detention officer tried to explain Friday why he and a fellow sheriff's office employee swiped a document from a defense attorney's file in a bizarre scene that was caught on courtroom videotape.
