Ruth McClung running in CD 7

We know, the name of the blog is the 8th but we are going to venture west to cover some news in CD 7. Ruth McClung is running for Congress against Raul Grijalva. Here is her web site.

No word yet if Sweeny will challenge Ruth for the nomination. Hopefully he will take a break this cycle.

It looks like our April 20th story was correct but hat tip to Sonoran Alliance for breaking the news today.

Rep. Grijalva: Public Option is Key to Health Care Reform

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Raul Grijalva and Rep. Mike Honda penned the following guest opinion on the Politico blog Public option is key to health reform:

Seventy-two percent of the American people support a robust public health insurance option that is available to everyone. A public option is good for our families, is good for the American economy and is supported by the American public. As Congress moves forward with health care reform legislation this summer, we must include in our final reform package a robust public option linked to an existing federal provider network — for example, the Medicare network.

The current system is broken.

Thanks, Raul!

Thank you, Rep. Grijalva for opposing a war funding bill with no commitment to withdrawal.

Raul Grijalva was the only Democratic U.S. Representative from Arizona to vote "No" on the War Supplemental which contains no timeline for withdrawal.  Now I expected a "Yes" vote from Blue Dog Giffords and Blue Dog wannabe Mitchell, but what's up with Ed Pastor?

Bizarrely, many Repubs, including Franks and Shadegg, opposed the War Supplemental because it contains funding for the IMF to bail out Eastern Europe. Hmmn, didn't these guys call Democrats who voted against any war funding when Shrub was President "Defeatocrats" and worse?  Just sayin'.

CD 7 news

A reader contacted us this morning and said a Republican from LD 27 may be running against Congressman Raúl Grijalva in CD 7. We will admit that the Democrats have a noticeable registration advantage in the district. If people voted based on looks then 2010 might be a good year for Republicans in CD 7. We hear the possible candidate is smart as well. When we have more information we will pass it along.

Republican candidate in CD 7?

Franks vs. Grijalva on El Salvador

Robert Naiman:
Last week, more than 30 Members of Congress joined Rep. Raul Grijalva in asking President Obama to affirm U.S. neutrality in El Salvador’s Presidential election on Sunday March 15, to stop the recycling in El Salvador of US threats when Salvadorans voted in 2004. But there has been no high-level response from the Obama [...]

Congress to probe alleged Arpaio abuses

A U.S. House committee chairman said Wednesday he’ll hold a hearing next month on alleged civil rights abuses by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers said at a news conference that he will hold a hearing in late April examining the conduct of Arpaio, who has been conducting sweeps in Hispanic neighborhoods in the Valley that have resulted in the arrests of illegal immigrants.

Conyers, D-Mich., said the hearing will also examine other examples from around the country of alleged abuses of a program that allows local police departments to enforce federal immigration laws.

“We’re not trying to persecute or take advantage of anybody,” Conyers said.

NEWS FEED: Seeing Red AZ

Where’s Jeff Flake and why does he want to help “turn more red states blue?”

Although Arizona Congressman Jeff Flake has been a vigerous supporter of Democrat Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez when partnering with him on immigration reform issues in Washington, he is mysteriously MIA from the list of those attending the Phoenix rally for legailzation of the nation’s millions of illegal aliens today. Democrat Congressmen Raul Grijalva and Ed [...]

Cannibalism: Democrat Style

Congressman Raul Grijalva sent a missive to his faithful this week. In it, he speaks of challenges “we” face on The Hill. I can only presume that “we” means “flaming liberals.” He goes on to elaborate that these challenges are to, gasp, President Obama’s “good, concrete solutions to three of our country's most pressing problems - climate change, healthcare reform and mortgage bankruptcy crisis.”

He also explains that “we” (I assume that this still means the “flaming liberals”) must act swiftly—get this—“without the usual political calculations that unfortunately have become all too prevalent within our Party.” Yes, they must act presumably before people wise up to the political Ponzi scheme they’ve set into motion.

Lazy Posting: National Journal Liberal/Conservative Ratings

The National Journal has released their 2008 Vote Ratings. The results are really no surprise, but after the jump are the ratings for the Arizona delegation, broken up by “issue categories”. I’ll post the Senate ratings later.

Note: The ratings are percentiles, so a member having a rating of 75 would be have a more liberal voting record than three quarters of his or her collegues.

ECONOMY:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 63 others for most liberal. Flake and Franks tied with six others for least liberal.

SOCIAL:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 78 others for most liberal. Flake, Franks and Shadegg tied with 42 others for least liberal.
