House Ethics Committee launches investigation of Renzi

A week after being indicted by the Justice Department on 35 counts ranging from wire fraud to money laundering, the House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into the activities of Rep. Rick Renzi (R-1).

Kirkpatrick to Renzi: "Resign immediately"

Ann Kirkpatrick, former state legislator and Democratic candidate for the 1st District U.S. House seat, has called on the current seatholder, Rep. Rick Renzi, to "resign and resign immediately."

Kirkpatrick had been silent on the question of Renzi's resignation up until now. Renzi was indicted by federal prosecutors Friday on 35 counts including money laundering and extortion. Renzi declared yesterday that he "will not resign and wear the cloak of guilt," proclaiming his innocence. According to Kirkpatrick, that promted her release of a statement today:

Sylvia Allen favors Renzi resignation

Sylvia Tenney Allen, who is running for the Arizona House from LD5, thinks Rep. Rick Renzi (R-1), indicted Friday on 35 counts of extortion, money laundering and wire fraud, should resign his seat.

"I feel bad for Congressman Renzi," Allen told PolitickerAZ. "I think he's been a good congressman and represented the 1st District well."

"However," she continued, "whenever politicians have problems as serious as this, they should step down. I do think he should resign."

Mayes believes Renzi "will do what's best for the district"

Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes is "confident Congressman Renzi will do what is best for the district and his constituents," Mayes spokesman Robert Johnson told PolitickerAZ today. "He's still the Congressman." Johnson wouldn't elaborate on whether Mayes thinks Renzi should resign or not. "That's not something she feels she should comment on."

Renzi no longer a McCain co-chair

As of yesterday, Rep. Rick Renzi (R-1), indicted on 35 federal counts Friday, has been removed from Sen. John McCain's leadership team, where he had been an Arizona co-chair. McCain had announced in his blogger conference call that Renzi was expected to step down from the campaign.
