"It's their party and they'll purge if they want to..."

My apologies to Lesley Gore for the caption.

The Republican National Committee will hold its winter meeting in January in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Honolulu? Isn't Hawaii dismissed by conservatives as being "some sort of foreign, exotic place" not quite part of the United States, despite being the 50th state admitted to the Union in 1959, some fifty years ago? Cokie Roberts again criticizes Obama for "exotic" trip home to Hawaii

Wait a minute. Is this about the birthers taking a day trip to the Hawaii Department of Health to see Barack Obama's original birth certificate first hand for themselves? Hawaii officials confirm Obama’s original birth certificate still exists | The Honolulu Advertiser

But I digress.

Governor Charlie Crist, who is already running for the seat, gets to appoint his replacement.

The Miami Herald reports Mel Martinez to resign | Naked Politics:

DNC ads praise Reps. Giffords and Kirkpatrick for health care work

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America arm is launching radio spots praising two centrist Arizona congresswomen for "taking on the lobbyists and the special interests and standing up for us and our families" and "working every day to make sure we have affordable quality health care." AZ/DC Blog: DNC ads praise Giffords, Kirkpatrick for health-care work:

The ads give some support to Democratic Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Ann Kirkpatrick as they talk to constituents about the ongoing health-care reform debate. The House last week adjourned for its August district work period and the Senate is expected to do the same at the end of this week.

Who exactly are the Blue Dogs trying to appease?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Blue Dog Democrats got elected to office on the strength of progressive party activists and union members walking, phone banking, and contributing money and material to their campaigns (often suppressing their concerns over supporting a Democrat who self-identifies as "conservative"). You don't show gratitude to your supporters by biting the hand that feeds you.

Do the Blue Dogs really believe that defying their Democratic Party leadership will ingratiate them with their Democratic Party progressive base, or somehow miraculously insulate them from having to face a Republican Party challenger in the next election? "Illogical," as Spock would say. "Delusional," I would argue.

Who speaks for the GOP? "No One" does

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Gallup has a new poll out which asked the burning question, "Who is the main person who speaks for the Republican Party today?"

Top response: No opinion   37%

Next top response: No one 14%

That's 51% of respondents who cannot readily identify who is the main person who speaks for the Republican Party today.

Gallup had to drill down into the polling data to come up with this headline: Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney Seen as Speaking for GOP So that's what "RNC" stands for: Rush + Newt + Cheney = "leadership vacuum."

Let's take a look at the poll results:

Gallup analysis:

Additionally, no one person dominates even among Republicans who are able to name someone who speaks for their party.

What Socialism? Putting things into proper perspective

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Conor Clarke at the Atlantic provides this invaluable perspective on the Wingnuttia hysteria that the U.S. is becoming a socialist state. It's not even worth mentioning. What Socialism Looks Like

Have you heard that the United States is headed toward socialism? Jonah Goldberg says it is. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby says it is. Phyllis Schlafly says it is. Richard Viguerie says it is. The Republican National Committee says it is. We must be getting pretty close.

How close? This is what socialism looks like:

The hot-pink portion of this pie chart is the percentage of listed American business assets that have recently been nationalized by the American government (ie, General Motors).

Steele capitulates, cedes power to his critics at RNC

The Moonie Times has yet another EXCLUSIVE: Steele yields powers to foes in RNC - Washington Times:

Capitulating to critics on the Republican National Committee, embattled Republican Party Chairman Michael S. Steele has signed a secret pact agreeing to controls and restraints on how he spends hundreds of millions of dollars in party funds and contracts, The Washington Times has learned.

The "good governance" agreement revives checks and balances Mr. Steele resisted implementing for RNC contracts, fees for legal work and other expenditures that were not renewed after the 2008 presidential nominating contest.

The agreement, proposed by several current and former RNC officials, goes further, making 33-year RNC veteran Jay Banning, who was fired by Mr.

The finger-pointing blame game begins in the GOP

Posted By AzBlueMeanie:

I have never considered Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and George Voinovich (R-OH) as "moderate" Republicans, but if the conservative Politico blog wants to suggest that they are I will play along for purposes of this report. Republicans feud over Specter:

Faced with a high-profile defection and the prospect of political irrelevance in the Senate, Republicans took off the gloves Wednesday for a ferocious game of finger-pointing.

Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch and George Voinovich blamed the Club for Growth for imposing a right-wing litmus test that chased Arlen Specter out of the Republican Party. The Club for Growth blamed Specter — first for helping to ruin the GOP and then for leaving it.

Update: Pullen the trigger on Steele

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

This is starting to get interesting. Apparently nominal RNC Chairman Michael Steele was recently out of the country and he was none too happy to learn upon his return stateside that his lieutenants have been plotting a coup d'état against him in the Banana Republican Party. (Thanks, Dave)

The Moonie Times today has another EXCLUSIVE: Steele fights back against RNC 'scheme' - Washington Times:

The embattled Republican National Committee chairman angrily returned fire in his fight with current and former officers over control of the GOP's purse strings.

Under attack from conservatives since taking office on Jan. 30, Michael S. Steele on Wednesday blasted a group of members pushing for new checks and balances on the chairman's spending powers, accusing them of a power grab "scheme.
