Republican Born Again Deficit Virgins

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

John Perr is one of the better economics bloggers. He posted this piece at crooksandliars.com Born Again Deficit Virgins:

Everything you need to know about the descent of the conservative movement into a hypocritical caricature is illustrated by two of its proudest constituencies: Republican deficit hawks and so-called "born again virgins." Having already violated the moral strictures they claim to hold dearest, each now asks the American people to join them in pretending their sin never happened. But unlike a generation of Republican leaders who built a mountain of national debt for the United States, the secondary virgins only screwed themselves.

A "Tea Party" party registers in Florida

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Ben Smith reports at politico.com A Tea Party party registers in Florida:

A Florida conservative has registered an official "Tea Party" with the office of the Secretary of State, and is promising to run candidates against Republicans and Democrats in state and national races.

"The current system has become mired in the sludge of special interest money that seeks to control the leadership of both parties. It’s time for real change,” says Orlando lawyer Frederic O’Neal, the new party's chairman, who couldn't be reached immediately by phone, in a press release.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Secretary of State, Jennifer Davis, said the party had registered in August, and that its qualified candidates will appear on the ballot in the state.

C Street abortion ban: the revenge of "The Family"?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Affordable Health Care for America Act was supposed to be the first time since Medicare was enacted in 1965 that health care was reformed to move the country closer to universal medical coverage for all of its citizens.

Instead, the bill was hijacked by anti-abortion activists to enact the most regressive anti-reproductive freedom of choice for women provision in the past 30 years. Apparently conservatives in both political parties don't want government run health care except forwomen so that government can dictate their reproductive health care choices. (Also to dictate all of our end-of-life decisions, aka"death panels" and Terri Schiavo government intervention).

SWAG Update: Early Filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now that local elections are all but over for the counting in Tucson (and a possible recount in Ward 3), it's time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

The big news today: Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year. Political Insider Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson previously announced that they would not run. Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has also decided not to run

Epic Teabagger fail in NY-23

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

How do you take the textbook definition of a "safe" Republican district (a Democrat has not represented the region since 1854), a no-brainer that the Republican will win by default against token Democratic opposition, and lose the seat for the first time in 155 years? By caving in to pressure from the far-right extremist fringe Teabagger Taliban and the Mighty Wurlitzer of right-wing conservative "entertainment" personalities.

Blue Dog Democrat Bill Owens, the token opposition, won a stunning victory in the special congressional election in New York's 23rd congressional district only because the GOP Taliban and the conservative "entertainment" personalities declared civil war against GOP moderates and the GOP establishment, demanding ideological purity to conservativism - as they have defined it.

LULAC, PCDP and Arizona Democratic Hispanic Caucus Call on RNC Committeeman Bruce Ash to Apologize or Resign Over Racial Remarks

The League of United Latin American Citizens, the Arizona Democratic Hispanic Caucus and the Pima County Democratic Party are calling on Republican National Committeeman Bruce Ash to apologize for an appalling racial generalization he made last week during a call into the Jon Justice show.

Ash called into the Jon Justice show last week to comment on a public safety forum. He told listeners "if you ask the brown people, who live on the South Side, the West Side or in South Central, they will tell you how much fear they have.

Frank Rich on GOP Stalinist Purges

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

New York Times columnist Frank Rich has more on the GOP civil war in the NY-23 special election for Congress. There will be no "winner" in this race. The big loser, however, is the Republican Party. The G.O.P. Stalinists Invade Upstate New York:

[P]reposterous as it sounds, the real action migrated to New York’s 23rd, a rural Congressional district abutting Canada. That this pastoral setting could become a G.O.P. killing field, attracting an all-star cast of combatants led by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Kristol and Newt Gingrich, is a premise out of a Depression-era screwball comedy. But such farces have become the norm for the conservative movement — whether the participants are dressing up in full “tea party” drag or not.

GOP brand fail, civil war dividing party

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Media villagers and Beltway bloviators inform us of their conventional wisdom (CW) that Republicans will enjoy a mid-term election resurgence in 2010. First of all, when was the last time that CW was correct? Anyone? That's what I thought.

Secondly, the Beltway media elites have always shilled for the GOP, win or lose. These over-paid media elites have a vested financial interest in maintaining their Republican allies in Congress who protect the multi-billion dollar media conglomerate monopolies that pay their salaries. Ben Bagdikian - New Media Monopoly

No, the real political story of our time is not a GOP resurgence, but the GOP brand fail and the political civil war within the conservative movement.

Some folks are kinda peeved at me

by David Safier

Last week I broke tradition and put my Explorer column on BfA, the one about Jefferson's "Tree of liberty" quote that is beloved to lots of wingnuts.

Over at the Explorer, I got more comments than I think I've ever received, and none of the commenters are all too fond of me. I'm sure week after week they think I'm a liberal idiot (liberal with my idiocy?), but this column struck a nerve.

Here are some of the comments, excerpts or the whole thing. I'm sure these folks will say I'm quoting them out of context, which I am, but anyone can go to the column (which, unfortunately, disappears into the ether on Wednesday) and read the comments in all their glory.

Unashamed self promotion

by David Safier

Occasionally I've linked to one of the weekly columns I write for The Explorer, but I've never copied them here. I'm breaking with tradition and putting this week's column below. It came out of some posts and comments on BfA about a quotation used by right wingers (I won't even say ultra right wingers, because it's spread further than that): “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Here's the column.

In 1995, Timothy McVeigh bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. It was the worst act of homegrown terrorism in our nation's history.

When he set off the truck bomb, McVeigh was wearing a T-shirt that read: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
