And speaking of best buds (which I did below) . . .

by David Safier

Here's a photo of Vic Williams (R-LD26) hanging around with a few of his closest friends: Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth and Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Present but out of the shot, Andrew Thomas). That's Vic looking stern and resolute behind the big three.

The issue is immigration. With those folks sharing the microphone, you know the tone is harsh.

How harsh? The Republic, not known as a Republican-bashing publication or a bastion of liberalism, had this to say under the headline, "Pearce and crew fill leadership vacuum with bunk."

Because Congress has abdicated its responsibility to resolve illegal immigration, powers have stepped into their leadership vacuum.

This is a joke, right?

by David Safier

Please, someone tell me the Onion has temporarily taken over the Phoenix Business Journal, or it's putting out its April Fools edition six months early. No one could really be talking about this, could they?

Talk of Russell Pearce heading state police swirls around Capitol

The already-tense fight over immigration in the state could get a lot more intense.

There is talk at the State Capitol of state Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, possibly being named head of the state police.

Sources familiar with the situation say Brewer could be replacing Arizona Department of Public Safety director Roger Vanderpool and Pearce’s name has popped up.

(At right, Cutman, AKA Russell Pearce, half of the legislative Dynamic Duo, Cutman and Melvin)

The Farley Report for October 6, 2009

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Here is an abbreviated version of Rep. Steve Farley's latest Farley Report (edited for state legislative issues):

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause.

* * *

There is some talk of the Governor calling us into special session again next week (that's Special Session Number 4 for those of you keeping score at home), and perhaps another after that one's done. But the call has not yet gone out.

Farley Report, Oct 6, 2009

Rep. Farley (LD28) ponders the state of the state, and it ain't great:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause. Perhaps this could finally be a good use for Sheriff Joe?

Dressing the Governor and the Legislative majority in pink stripes and locking them into Tent City could finally force an agreement of some kind. Not that I want to spend too much time thinking of the images that go with that scenario.

Noted without comment

Headline: National Tea Party tour rolls into Flagstaff.

Over a thousand people showed up on Monday night to hear two bus-loads of conservative activists speak. The activists were part of the National Tea Party Express tour.

[snip]

There were several Arizona politicians that also addressed the crowd. Senator Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, echoed the crowds sentiments when he vowed to fight any health care reform bill that pays for abortions and sanctions "death panels"

"Not on my watch," the Mesa Republican shouted.

Pearce wanted to politically mobilize the crowd and encourage conservatives to organize for the 2010 elections.

"We are going to take back this country. And it starts here.

Epic Fail Part Deux: The Accidental Governor and GOP Legislature Fail to Produce a Budget - Again

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

"It's like déjà vu, all over again." -- Yogi Berra.

It's official. One month after the GOP-controlled Legislature and our Accidental Governor failed to produce a balanced budget before the constitutionally mandated July 1 deadline for the first time in Arizona history, and four weeks into a Special Session, Republicans have once again failed to produce a balanced state budget. Arizona Capitol Times » No budget this week; session will drag into Aug. (subscription required):

The Senate met for a few minutes today (July 31), but only to adjourn the special session until Aug. 4. Even then, though, it’s not clear whether leaders in the Senate will be able to gather enough votes to pass the budget legislation that has tied them up for the past several days.

It's July 16th - Do You Know Where Your Legislators Are?

Arizona's budget deficit is now estimated at $3.4 billion.  During the worst budget crisis in state history, many of our Republican state legislators are attending an ALEC convention in Atlanta, Georgia listening to the likes of Zell Miller suggest that Rahm Emanuel put "Gorilla Glue" on President Obama's chair to prevent him from "gallivanting around" the globe.

The Arizona Education Network reports:

The list of our "representatives" who are reportedly bailed out of Arizona for a little Georgia hob-nobbing this week:  Representatives Cecil Ash, Ray Barnes, Nancy Barto, Sam Crump, John Kavanagh, Debbie Lesko, John McComish, Nancy McLain and Steve Yarbrough.

In addition to Senate President Robert Burns, Senators Pamela Gorman, Jack Harper, Barbara Leff, Al Melvin and Russell Pearce also on the list of ALEC conference attendees.

Apocalypse averted . . . so now what?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse -- House Speaker Kirk Adams, Senate President Bob Burns, House Appropriations Committee chairman John Kavanagh, and Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Russell Pearce -- tried their best to destroy the state of Arizona. But they were thwarted (temporarily) by the veto stamp of the Accidental Governor -- who would herself be the Fifth Horseman (woman?) of the Apocalypse if only she met the height and weight requirements.

Some of this blog's readers who see the world in stark contrasts of only black and white have argued that "So what if the government of Arizona shuts down? Would anyone even notice?" In other words, if the epic failure of leadership of our Accidental Governor and the GOP insane clown posse leadership does not immediately result in an end of the world Apocalypse, "what's the problem?" When one can only view the world in terms of such extreme dichotomy, it is easy to make excuses for the lack of competency to govern and the lack of basic human decency, dare I say, empathy and compassion for one's fellow man.
