Arizona Daily Star: Legislators beholden to Norquist pledge don't deserve their jobs

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have previously written here about the Grover Norquist "no tax" pledge that "[Lawmakers] have violated their oath of office by pledging their undying allegiance and loyalty to a corrupt K Street lobbyist, which for them takes precedence over their oath of office, and any accountability to the constituents who elected them. Anyone who signed this pledge is unfit to serve in public office."

Today the Arizona Daily Star joins us with its editorial opinion Are no-new-tax state lawmakers merely puppets?:

Our View: Legislators beholden to Norquist pledge don't deserve their jobs

What's wrong with this picture? State legislators elected to represent the people of Arizona are receiving direction from Washington-based, uber-conservative, anti-tax gadfly Grover Norquist.

It's July 16th - Do You Know Where Your Legislators Are?

Arizona's budget deficit is now estimated at $3.4 billion.  During the worst budget crisis in state history, many of our Republican state legislators are attending an ALEC convention in Atlanta, Georgia listening to the likes of Zell Miller suggest that Rahm Emanuel put "Gorilla Glue" on President Obama's chair to prevent him from "gallivanting around" the globe.

The Arizona Education Network reports:

The list of our "representatives" who are reportedly bailed out of Arizona for a little Georgia hob-nobbing this week:  Representatives Cecil Ash, Ray Barnes, Nancy Barto, Sam Crump, John Kavanagh, Debbie Lesko, John McComish, Nancy McLain and Steve Yarbrough.

In addition to Senate President Robert Burns, Senators Pamela Gorman, Jack Harper, Barbara Leff, Al Melvin and Russell Pearce also on the list of ALEC conference attendees.

Groundhog Day

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

When the clock struck midnight on June 30, legislative leaders ordered the clocks in the Arizona Legislature turned off to suspend time so that it would still be June 30. Day 171 of the regular legislative session never occurred.

On day 171, the Accidental Governor vetoed the budget of the GOP insane clown posse leadership. So it was as if the previous 171 days of the legislative session never occurred either.

Like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, the Arizona Legislature is forced to relive the same day over and over again until it finally learns to produce a balanced state budget that the Accidental Governor will actually agree to sign.

Condemnation for photo-enforcement shooting

Sunday night's shooting death of a RedFlex Traffic Systems employee sent ripples through the debate surrounding photo enforcement on Arizona highways.
Doug Georgianni, 51, was parked inside a photo enforcement vehicle on the eastbound State Route 101 near 7th Avenue when the vehicle was attacked, according to authorities. Police on Monday arrested Thomas Patrick Destories, 68, of Phoenix on suspicion of first-degree murder.
State Rep. Sam Crump, who is sponsoring legislation to terminate the speed-camera system, issued a statement condemning the attack.
"I am also aware of the escalating passions on both sides of the public debate over speed cameras. While we don't ...

Bill would remove speed cameras in 2010

PHOENIX - Elimination of the state's speed camera program wouldn't happen until July 2010 under new legislation proposed by a lawmaker who originally wanted an immediate repeal.

Panel votes to scrap photo enforcement

Republican Rep. Sam Crump of Anthem said he changed the bill because colleagues were worried about potential liability to the state resulting from an immediate repeal.

The contract with the company running the Department of Public Safety speed camera program requires state payments if it is canceled before it runs out in 2010.

The new version of Crump's bill also contains numerous provisions imposing new requirements and restrictions on signs, speed limits and other aspects before the program expires.

A House committee was scheduled to hear the new version Wednesday but consideration was postponed for a week.

Ham radio operators push for towers in HOAs

Randy Malick knew when he moved into the Rancho Vistoso subdivision in Oro Valley, north of Tucson, seven years ago that the homeowner rules did not allow amateur radio towers.

But he decided to buy a house there anyway even though he has had a ham radio license since 1991.

Now Malick is at the forefront of a move to convince state lawmakers to force homeowner associations to allow these towers, regardless of whether a majority of neighbors want them or not.

Malick and his fellow operators won the first round Wednesday when the House Committee on Military Affairs and Public Safety voted 5-3 to force HOAs to provide for "reasonable heights and dimensions" for such towers.

State moves to - officially - have a nickname

Quick: What's Arizona's official nickname? Think you know? You're probably wrong.

Templar: Let’s call it ‘Land of the Saguaro’

Truth be told, it's a trick question. Arizona has no official nickname, as state historian Marshall Trimble said he learned. But state lawmakers took the first steps Tuesday to change all that.

Trimble told members of the House Government Committee that he gets queries from around the world about the state. One of those, he said, came from a child inquiring about Arizona's nickname.

It's not, as he found out, "The Grand Canyon State," even though that's what's on license plates.

Nor, he found out, were some of the other names used for Arizona.

Crump in the News

I find it a little odd that the Arizona Republic would run an article on State Representative Sam Crump yesterday.

Maybe I’m missing something but how often does any of Arizona’s local media run “Spotlight” stories on legislators unless it’s a hit piece?

Can we expect to see more stories like this or is this a new series?

Hurting government workers should thank the media for electing Napolitano

There is a bit of irony reading the media’s eagerly reported daily updates of government employee layoffs and furloughs. After all, Napolitano would never have gotten elected if it hadn’t been for the constant cheerleading she was given in the Arizona Republic, East Valley Tribune, and other local left-leaning news media. During both gubernatorial elections, as well as year round, they essentially acted like a wing of her campaign. Napolitano was responsible for presiding over the biggest deficit in Arizona’s history, using strong-armed tactics to keep pork and payoffs in each year’s budget. Now we have unnecessary programs like all-day kindergarten (which has no visible effect on children by grade 5 according to a Goldwater Institute report) and 21st Century Fund, which Rep.
