Election day diversion: Melvin, "loser-tarians" and nukes

by David Safier

If you haven't voted yet, VOTE! And if friends haven't voted, drag them to the polls.

Meanwhile, on a topic more suitable to the 2010 election a year from now:

Cap'n Al Melvin attended a town hall in Oro Valley October 30, sponsored by Americans for Prosperity and the Goldwater Institute. He praised the sponsors' efforts to rein in state budget spending, then spoke about why things are in the legislative mess they are today. It's because in the state senate, two Republicans are far left, and two others are "loser-tarians." Apparently he got a big laugh from some members of the audience for his little word play.

Sylvia Allen's "6,000 years" makes Daily Kos

by David Safier
Following the Arizona Guardian's lead, I posted a clip of Sen. Sylvia Allen saying, not once but twice, that "This earth's been here 6,000 years." The clip has gone viral. Today it made it to Daily Kos. The text before the clip reads, "Holy cripes, Arizona State Sen. Sylvia Allen is a complete loon!"

But that's just the tip of the iceberg, according to the Guardian,

The Arizona Guardian video posted last week of Allen declaring the Earth 6,000 years old begat a YouTube video which begat a Discover Magazine blog which begat more than 1,400 Digg referrals. It also begat a Comedy Central posting titled "Did Adam and Eve care about the environment 6,000 years ago? I think not.

AZ State Senator Sylvia Allen must have missed a few Earth Science classes

AZ State Senator Sylvia Allen, arguing for increased uranium mining in Arizona, claims the Earth is 6000 years old. She apparently doesn't know that Uranium has a radioactive half life of 4.47 billion years. Like the implanted dinosaur fossils, God apparently imported uranium from one of his previous projects to throw off the non-believers and (eww) scientists.

The Farley Report June 23, 2009

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Steve Farley (D-Tucson) thinks that our Accidental Governor and the GOP insane clown possee leadership will sell out Arizonans and come to a compromise deal on the budget at the last minute, while entirely shutting out slightly less than half of all Arizonans who are represented by Democratic legislators in this state from the process.

Aren't these the same Republicans who are incessantly whining about bipartisanship in Congress? My, mistake. When Republicans say "bipartisanship" they actually mean "my way." When they have control, their totalitarian nature comes to full flower. This disaster is a GOP production -- they own it.

Farley Report, June 22, 2009

Arizona held hostage, Day 22:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

One more week until we must deliver a balanced budget or face government shutdown.

Democrats have the one reasonable plan on the table, but I'm not going to ask you to contact the governor's office to urge Governor Brewer to negotiate with us because she is still not listening to you. Despite your outpouring of support, our Democratic budget is still not being considered by the Republican leadership in the Legislature or the Governor's Office.

The Governor is still pushing ahead on her special action in the state Supreme Court to force the Republican leadership to send their budget bills to her so she can veto them.
