GOP insane clown posse disregards law, gets sued, costs the state money

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

First a quick update: The Accidental Governor and the GOP insane clown posse are trying for a special session this week to deal with agency funding issues. They were to have met over the weekend to hammer out the details of a plan that they hope will be a one day special session on Thursday. I checked the Governor's web page and she has not yet called for a special session, and her calendar has her going out of town this week. Things could change, but it's not looking optimistic.

There has been a troubling trend in Arizona government for years now.

Tuition tax credit task force meeting, Part 3

This hearing will not be televised

by David Safier

[Note: In classic blog fashion, Part 3 is at the top of the page with Parts 2 and 1 following. Scroll down if you want to read them in the order they were written.]

These days, state legislative business is videotaped and streamed on the web. It's one of those wonderful high tech features that were impossible a few years ago. Bring the government to the people! (or at least let them watch the sausage-making live on their computer screens.)

The first meeting of the House's tuition tax credit/STO task force was streamed, as usual. Wednesday's session, however, wasn't.

Goddard files paperwork to explore gubernatorial run

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year.
The step is a formality, the furthest the state's resign-to-run law allows a sitting office holder to go in preparing a campaign for a different position. As of Jan. 1, Goddard - who is term-limited next year - will be allowed to formally launch his campaign.
Regardless, Goddard's first official step toward the gubernatorial campaign is significant. He is the first Democrat to inch into the race and he does so as the overwhelming favorite to capture his party's nomination. ...

Felecia Rotellini, the former state prosecutor known for her investigations of white-collar crimes, officially entered the race to replace Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard in 2010.
Rotellini, a Democrat who formed an exploratory committee last month, announced Tuesday that she was converting it into a full-fledged campaign committee.
"The overwhelming response I've received to my exploratory effort over the last several weeks has convinced me more than ever that I am the right candidate to run for attorney general," Rotellini said in a statement. "As I travel around the state talking to Arizonans, they tell me they want a tough, disciplined prosecutor ...

Here is a news item from the past week that, as far as I can find, was not reported in any of the major newspapers in Arizona - with the exception of the online Arizona Guardian (subscription required). Curious...

Goddard announces $900,000 settlement over inflated drug prices
WEDNESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 2009 12:25

(Phoenix, Ariz. -- Sept. 23, 2009) Attorney General Terry Goddard today announced a $900,000 settlement with Bristol-Meyers Squibb (BMS) over allegations that the pharmaceutical company set fraudulently inflated prices for certain drugs purchased by consumers, insurers and other payers.

Special Session Alert: Deal or No Deal?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Guardian (subscription required) reports that efforts by the Accidental Governor and the GOP insane clown posse leadership's effort to ram a complicated state budget though the Legislature stalled Wednesday night after leaders couldn't come up with enough votes to get the package through the Senate Appropriations Committee. Oops! Somebody couldn't count votes.

A tentative agreement to redo the 2010 state budget hung by a thread late Wednesday, with Senate President Bob Burns conceding that he doesn't have the votes he needs. Both chambers delayed action until today. Sales-tax plan stalls state budget compromise, again

As has been the case for months, the biggest cause for heartburn among the majority GOP was a temporary sales-tax increase sought by Gov.

Special Session Alert: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Guardian (subscription required) reports that "After weeks of closed-door meetings, GOP legislative leaders are trying to rush through a package of budget bills so fast that adequate public notice and participation will be all but impossible."

"On Tuesday, Republicans in the Senate voted to suspend the rules in order to allow the bills to be heard in committees without the required prior notification." Senate leaders decided to hold the hearing Wednesday morning.

"Senate President Bob Burns said lawmakers will then try to move the entire budget deal out of the Legislature by the end of the day. The House is scheduled to come back at 1:30 p.
