Republican congressmen criticize Arpaio probe

Ten Republican congressmen said Wednesday that a civil rights investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office could have a chilling effect on other state and local police agencies that seek to crack down on illegal immigration.

The congressmen, who were responding a Department of Justice probe into allegations of discrimination and unconstitutional searches and seizures by the sheriff's office, asked Attorney General Eric Holder to voice support for vigorous immigration enforcement and assure police agencies that they won't face similar investigations.

"It is important that state and local law enforcement officers and the public are reassured that the investigation is proceeding in a judicious and fair manner, and not for the purpose of politicizing or chilling immigration efforts," the 10 congressmen said in a letter to Holder.

Lazy Posting: National Journal Liberal/Conservative Ratings

The National Journal has released their 2008 Vote Ratings. The results are really no surprise, but after the jump are the ratings for the Arizona delegation, broken up by “issue categories”. I’ll post the Senate ratings later.

Note: The ratings are percentiles, so a member having a rating of 75 would be have a more liberal voting record than three quarters of his or her collegues.

ECONOMY:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 63 others for most liberal. Flake and Franks tied with six others for least liberal.

SOCIAL:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 78 others for most liberal. Flake, Franks and Shadegg tied with 42 others for least liberal.

PULLEN PRAISES AZ GOP DELEGATION FOR HANGING TOUGH AGAINST STIMULUS BILL
GOP Chief Critical of AZ Democrat Congressional Democrats

Phoenix, AZ - Randy Pullen, chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, today lauded Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl and Representatives Jeff Flake, Trent Franks, and John Shadegg in opposing the Democrat stimulus bill.

“Our elected representatives in Congress showed true grit and fortitude in opposing a bill that was bad for America,” said Pullen. “This was a one-sided Democrat bill that was the brainchild of an overreaching Democrat President and a Democrat Congress anxious to pay off their campaign supporters.

There’s a Football Game Tomorrow

Barack Obama will be having a Super Bowl party at the White House tomorrow where the invitees are ten members of congress. Among them, our own Raúl Grijalva and Trent Franks.

Franks is likely invited because he “represents” the Cardinals since his district includes Glendale. Who knows, maybe an encounter with Obama will change his ways. Come on over, Trent, be cool, we’ll be your friends…

The gathering will be bittersweet for Grijalva, as his beloved Oakland Raiders will not be playing in the game. Again.

Republican Whips Wants Your Input

January 30, 2009 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today announced the launch of http://republicanwhip.house.gov/jobs, a new website outlining the House Republican Economic Recovery Plan. The website details the smarter, simpler stimulus plan proposed by House Republicans that will create twice the jobs at half the price of the economic package that Democrats forced through the House despite bipartisan opposition.

Franks stated, “American families and job creating small businesses are facing unprecedented challenges, which is why House Republicans have proposed an Economic Recovery Plan that will actually create jobs for the people of the Arizona’s Second Congressional District. We believe that the focus of any stimulus package must be on helping working families and small businesses.
