And speaking of best buds (which I did below) . . .

by David Safier

Here's a photo of Vic Williams (R-LD26) hanging around with a few of his closest friends: Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth and Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Present but out of the shot, Andrew Thomas). That's Vic looking stern and resolute behind the big three.

The issue is immigration. With those folks sharing the microphone, you know the tone is harsh.

How harsh? The Republic, not known as a Republican-bashing publication or a bastion of liberalism, had this to say under the headline, "Pearce and crew fill leadership vacuum with bunk."

Because Congress has abdicated its responsibility to resolve illegal immigration, powers have stepped into their leadership vacuum.

Tea Party Tall Tales in Tucson

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rhonda Bodfield of the Arizona Daily Star fact checked, in a roundabout manner, the wild claims being made by the "Republican" candidates for Tucson city council and their Tea Party supporters. Tea Party organizers, Dems square off at downtown events. Here is her fact check reformatted:

Claim: Members of the Tea Party criticized the City Council's February decision to lease the building to the Museum of Contemporary Art for $1 a year.

Fact: The museum, which plans to move into the building in the next few months, was the sole bidder for a five-year lease that can be revoked with one year's notice.

Gila Courier: "We need to discipline Asian students!"

by David Safier
OK, I'll accept the possibility that this headline from the conservative Gila Courier (which contains the wit and wisdom of Trent Humphries, who used to have his own blog, Arizona 8th) is meant as sarcasm:

TUSD teachers soft on Asian kids

But the headline comes from the basket-of-crazy wing of our political circus which has brought us Tea Parties, Birthers, Deathers, Obama-wants-to-corrupt-our-school-children, They're-building-concentration-camps-for-conservatives, Republicans-won't-get-health-care -- sorry if I left out your personal favorite -- so I have to assume that nothing is so nutty it's not meant to be taken seriously.

The subject here is a new TUSD plan addressing the issue of race in the district's schools in a number of arenas.

City Council votes for tax increase

In the end the Tucson City Council voted 6-1 to raise taxes on a broad range or utilities and services. The meeting went on with a whimper rather than a bang. The event was held in the regular council chambers and there was ample room for those who attended. Here is our photo essay of the sad moment.

News hounds.

Trent Humphries of the Tucson Tea Party talks to the media.

Who let the dogs in?

Rodney Glassman was the only no vote. Can we send them all to Colorado for the summer?

Trasoff even managed to stay awake.

City of Tucson: an evil plan for revenue

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The City of Tucson Council meeting Tuesday night was a raucus event with protestors out in force to object to the 2% "renters sales tax" proposed by newly elevated City Manager Mike Letcher. Proposal for 2% tax on renters is blasted Some of the protesters wearing red were with Trent Humphries (a former Republican legislative candidate) and his Tucson Tea Party, which is opposed to all taxes and fee increases. Go away, already. Other individuals who possess a social consience wore red for the coalition of housing associations arguing that the tax would affect the poorest Tucsonans at a time they can least afford to pay.

How the right distorts symbols of democracy for their undemocratic ends

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

You will recall that back on February 19, 2009, CNBC analyst Rick Santelli complained about the Obama administration's plans to assist homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages or in foreclosure.

Santelli, who is a multi-millionaire former derivatives trader - you know, the people who invented splicing and dicing of subprime mortgages and then bundling them together into collaterized debt obligations (CDO) of questionable value, and who made millions of dollars in profits on these "toxic assets" until their House of Cards Ponzi Scheme came crashing down - stood in the well of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and called his fellow Americans who are in desperate financial straights "losers.

Better Know a District Race: LD26 House Republicans

The Democrats in LD26 have high hopes for this Republican-favoring district. Bolstered by the election of a Democratic senator, Charlene Pesquiera (D-Tucson), and House member, Lena Saradnik, in 2006, Democratic candidates Cheryl Cage, Rep.
