Maricopa Community College District Board goes rogue

by David Safier

This is about Maricopa and it's about community colleges -- a bit out of my usual physical and educational geography -- but really, it's about a rogue members of a Board trying to use the colleges for personal and political ends, educational mission be damned. And that kind of abuse of education is always in my blogging neighborhood.

A 55 page report (h/t to Dawn Teo for bring it to my attention) that came out recently raked the board over the coals. Among the charges, taken verbatim from the report:

  • Attempting to control and censor student newspaper content.
  • Asserting the right to control content in courses based on appropriateness according to the standards of individual board members.

Republican Born Again Deficit Virgins

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

John Perr is one of the better economics bloggers. He posted this piece at crooksandliars.com Born Again Deficit Virgins:

Everything you need to know about the descent of the conservative movement into a hypocritical caricature is illustrated by two of its proudest constituencies: Republican deficit hawks and so-called "born again virgins." Having already violated the moral strictures they claim to hold dearest, each now asks the American people to join them in pretending their sin never happened. But unlike a generation of Republican leaders who built a mountain of national debt for the United States, the secondary virgins only screwed themselves.

ADL Special Reports: Rage Grows in America: Anti‑Government Conspiracies

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Anti-Defamation League has released the following ADL Special Reports: Rage Grows in America: Anti-Government Conspiracies

Introduction: A Year of Growing Animosity

Since the election of Barack Obama as president, a current of anti-government hostility has swept across the United States, creating a climate of fervor and activism with manifestations ranging from incivility in public forums to acts of intimidation and violence.

What characterizes this anti-government hostility is a shared belief that Obama and his administration actually pose a threat to the future of the United States. Some accuse Obama of plotting to bring socialism to the United States, while others claim he will bring about Nazism or fascism.

American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform, Bob Barr back AG Holder's decision to try terrorism suspects in U.S.

This is why I was careful to say "many conservatives" rather than generalize and paint with a broad brush all conservatives in my earlier post on this topic. There are still many conservatives who share with their more liberal counterparts an abiding faith in the Constitution and the rule of law.

David Keene of the American Conservative Union, Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, and former congressman/Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr are backing a proposal to send Guantanamo Bay detainees to a prison in Illinois, as well as President Obama’s plan to try terrorism suspects in federal courts. C Street abortion ban: the revenge of "The Family"?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Affordable Health Care for America Act was supposed to be the first time since Medicare was enacted in 1965 that health care was reformed to move the country closer to universal medical coverage for all of its citizens.

Instead, the bill was hijacked by anti-abortion activists to enact the most regressive anti-reproductive freedom of choice for women provision in the past 30 years. Apparently conservatives in both political parties don't want government run health care except forwomen so that government can dictate their reproductive health care choices. (Also to dictate all of our end-of-life decisions, aka"death panels" and Terri Schiavo government intervention).

TABOR initiatives defeated in Maine and Washington

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

A h/t to Flounder for a comment he posted earlier, "I think one of the biggest takeaways of the elections last night are that the right-wings TABOR Amendments failed in Maine and Washington."

During the Special Session this past summer, the Accidental Governor and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Russell Pearce agreed to include a mini-TABOR provision in the "Sham-Wow!" budget deal that failed to pass. We are likely to see these efforts revived in the next legislative regular session.

The right-wing think tanks that peddle the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) like a traveling medicine show selling a cure-all for what ails you and that pour millions of corporate cash into initiative and referendum campaigns have failed to garner enough signatures to qualify this destructive measure for the ballot in Arizona.

McClatchy News' Investigative Report on Goldman Sachs - Part 2

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

McClatchy News continues its investigative report on Goldman Sachs with part 2 of the series Goldman takes on new role: taking away people's homes:

Goldman Sachs spent years buying hundreds of thousands of subprime mortgages, many of them from some of the more unsavory lenders in the business, and packaging them into high-yield bonds. Now that the bottom has fallen out of that market, Goldman finds itself in a different role: as the big banker that takes homes away from folks such as the Beckers.

The couple alleges that Goldman declined for three years to confirm their suspicions that it had bought their mortgages from a subprime lender, even after they wrote to Goldman's then-Chief Executive Henry Paulson — later U.

McClatchy News' Investigative Report on Goldman Sachs - Part 1

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have written in this space before that I consider the giant Wall Street investment banks that nearly destroyed our economy to be nothing more than Ponzi schemes, a Casino Royale for unregulated speculative investments of no hard asset value, fueled by the greed of unscrupulous investors. To paraphrase Don Henley from a New York Minute, if I were in charge, "somebody's going to emergency, somebody's going to jail."

Much has been made of the Bernard Madoff and Robert Stanford investigations into their Ponzi schemes. But these guys were small fish compared to what the giant Wall Street investment banks did, and are still doing today using taxpayer TARP money.
