Parsing Mike Huckabee

Behold the strategically deployed adverb in Mike Huckabee's soundbite on Sarah Palin:

“I think that she’s not anywhere near the person that sometimes she’s been portrayed to be –- as completely lacking of any intellectual capacity.”

Nor is Mike Huckabee completely lacking of any ethics.

Huck chooses celebrity

Conservative NY Times columnist Ross Douthat writes that both Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin chose celebrity over proving serious political attention after rising to prominence in campaign 2008. To their political detriment.

For Palin, the serious path required at least serving out her term as governor before returning to the national stage. For Huckabee, it could have involved anything from starting a think tank to running for the Senate in 2010. For both, it would have meant wedding their political identity to ideas as well as attitudes.

So far, they’ve chosen celebrity instead. Huckabee spent the last year hamming it up on a weekly talk show, and the last month hawking a book of inspirational Christmas stories.

Huckabee defends Obama

Huffington Post takes note of a lightly covered speech by Mike Huckabee in which he termed "deplorable" and "shameful" the actions by Republicans who criticize every act by President Obama. He mentioned those who accused Obama of setting up a photo op by meeting the returning bodies of dead service members at a Delaware base and who criticized Michelle Obama for welcoming trick-or-treaters at the White House.

The underlying point, Huckabee concluded, was that knee-jerk criticism to the president was counter-productive to civil debate. "I hated it when people did that to George Bush," he said. "They couldn't even laugh at the man's jokes they found something wrong with everything and if we do that to Barack Obama, then shame on us, shame on us. No wonder our country is so divided when that happens."

Good for Huck.

Grover Norquist lays down the law

Thus sayeth Norquist about Mike Huckabee's presidential aspirations:

Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform and one of the most influential voices in the modern conservative movement, says he will be keeping a close eye on the activities of potential candidates over the next year and will be sure to tell Republican voters who’s a team player and who’s out for themselves.

“We’re going to put together a list of all the people thinking of running for president and ... give assignments to each of the would-be presidential candidates. For instance, if the former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee would like to run and be thought of as a serious candidate he better win that Senate seat in Arkansas (held by Democrat

Huckabee hits the sauce

Says here that Mike Huckabee has turned to protein shakes to trim off "25 pounds" gained due to a foot problem. Er, governor, how many feet have you eaten?

And still more bad reviews for Huckabee's whinefest with Politico that I mentioned earlier today. Are people starting to get to know the real Huckster?

Folksy musician and 2008 Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has brought people together. From the staid conservative thought-leader National Review to snarky DC gossip site Wonkette, from right-wing blogger Dan Riehl to liberal bastion The New Republic, everyone is a little disenchanted with Huckabee:

Barnstorming with Huckabee

Politico's Ben Smith does a major piece on Mike Huckabee, busy on a national book tour. It's as good as a political campaign for continuing exposure. Now the de facto favorite among Republicans for 2012, Huckabee still sounds reluctant to Smith. One big reason: a familiar theme -- money.

And now he really sounds like he won’t run for president.

“A factor that I’ve got to look at is [that] it means walking away from what I’m doing ,” he said. “I’d have to completely walk away from it and not get it back — they’re not going to keep the seat warm for you.

2012 tea leaves

Between his book tour, busy website and TV show, Mike Huckabee's name stays current in political attention on future elections. I think this mention in Power Line, a widely read conservative blog, might be worth a look in assessing the Republican echo chamber that's so important in future nomination battles. Huckabee still isn't sounding tough enough for Power Line's taste. Power Line lauds Huckabee's communication skills. But, reflecting on on shortcomings the blog saw in 2008, it doesn't sound like the former Arkansas governor has made a convert yet.

Qualified?

The number of people who, according to a Gallup poll, believe that Mike Huckabee is qualified to be president?  50.  What about Sarah Palin?  Only 31 percent believe she is qualified to hold the highest office in the land.

Huck on top

Susan Page of USA Today cites a recent poll that puts former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at the top of a list of prospective GOP presidential candidates (with 40 percent saying they would "seriously consider supporting"), just edging out Mitt Romney (39 percent).  Sarah Palin came in third at 33 percent.  Of course, it's a little early for this to really mean anything.  Page says, "None of the GOP prospects has announced he or she will join the race, but all are making the sort of appearances and speeches that would keep the option open."

GOP brothers at war

Frank Rich has a pretty good summary of the fratricidal GOP battle for an upstate New York congressional seat. Already, a solid Republican has been driven out of the race by  a torrent of attacks from the Club for Growth/Beck/Palin conservative candidate.

I should add that the conservative is the chosen candidate of Jackson T. Stephens Jr. of Little Rock, a Club for Growth moneybags. Stephens may buy himself a seat in upstate New York. If he does, it won't be of much help to locals, not that Jacko cares. The candidate is a carpetbagger who doesn't live in the district and knows next to nothing about it. But he's solid on the starve-government orthodoxy of his patrons.
