Verizon layoffs in LR

Roby Brock's Talk Business is reporting a round of layoffs at Verizon Wireless' big Little Rock operation, the former Alltel workforce. Numbers are not being released. Verizon says they are not substantial, but Roby's reporting hints they are not insignificant either. Laid-off workers will be eligible, a spokesman notes, for call center jobs Verizon is filling.

More Hawker Beechcraft layoffs

Roby Brock has a report on an undisclosed number of additional layoffs at the Hawker Beechcraft plant at the Little Rock airport. A blog reader with a friend on the workforce there says the number is sizable. The private plane facility once employed 600 before layoffs in May and August.

No more buses

Roby Brock reports on some sweet and sour news from Conway.  Although the town will be home to an Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield data center that will employ roughly 15 to 20 workers, the bus manufacturing plant owned by IC Corporation will consolidate operations with another plant and close to 477 jobs could be lost.

Busy day...

at the state legislature yesterday.  For all you open-government buffs, the House Management Committee decided to stream all House proceedings on the internet starting in February of 2010.  It will be interesting to see how that plays out logistically.  Roby Brock has more at Talk Business.  Also, Brock notes that a recent Talk Business poll shows that 57 percent of Arkansans have a favorable view of the state legislature (27 percent unfavorable).  You can also check out Speaker Robbie Wills' blog for his side of the story

Beebe: still popular

Roby Brock at Talk Business notes recent poll results showing a bit of a slip in the popularity numbers for Gov. Mike Beebe.  The governor saw a slip in his approval ratings, all the way down to 71 percent.  His favorable rating in July was 77.

Downturn

According to a new poll by Roby Brock at TalkBusiness, most Arkansans feel that the state's economy is headed headed for a downturn, even though a majority (57 percent) also think their personal situation is good.

Compared to our July TBQ Poll, there is a small shift in pessimism towards the state’s economy. The same percentage of respondents described the Arkansas economy as strong or in a recovery three months ago; however, more poll participants now feel that economic conditions are either approaching a recession, in a recession or in a depression. Overall, 70% describe the Arkansas economy in a negative light.

Who needs health care reform?

Roby Brock's new polling would lead you to believe there's no point in supporting health care reform in Arkansas. Numbers say 83 percent are at least somewhat satisfied with the quality of their health care and 80 percent are at least somewhat satisfied with their "current health insurance plan."

And, if you don't have a current health care plan?

The numbers also show a strong preference for private insurance plans and antipathy toward "government health care systems." I'm with this comment:

Democratic strategist Robert McLarty, who also provided input on the questions asked, argues, “When folks are asked about a government-run healthcare plan, they think about Big Brother, they think Orwell, they think socialism and even communism.  If you ask people about Medicare, Social Security, ARKids First, or Medicaid – well, people have a completely different opinion—and that is something I’m going to suggest for our next poll.”

Clinton's legacy: Golden

Today's installation of Roby Brock's Talk Business Quarterly polling measures how Arkansans feel about the Clinton presidency and the impact of the Clinton Library.

In a word: Good.

Make that very good -- 60 percent say he'll go down in history as above average or outstanding as president; 68 percent see a positive impact in the library. (And the negative would be what?)

Lottery mania wanes

New polling by Roby Brock'sTalk Business Quarterly indicates a solid majority of Arkansans -- 57 percent -- don't plan to buy a lottery in the next 12 months . Also, the favorable/unfavorable opinions on the lottery split 45/43. Not to worry, the players will make up for the non-players.

Wills' fig leaf on ethics

Roby Brock reports that House Speaker Robbie Wills has shaped a fig leaf to cover greed of fellow House members who've voted to end a rule that prevented legislators from raising campaign money for 30 days before, during and 30 days after a legislative session.

Wills would prohibit giving during the section. Big whoop. Book your party rooms now for the night before the session, when all have assembled, or the day after to pass along checks in expectation of good service or for a job well-done.
