Brown ad aims to contrast with warring Republicans

[img_assist|nid=760|title=Congressional candidate Charlie Brown|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=190|height=240]Democratic U.S. House candidate Charlie Brown's first television advertisement of the cycle strives to create an implicit contrast with warring Republican primary opponents Tom McClintock and Doug Ose, painting Brown as a patriotic and authentic figure who rises above partisanship and everyday politics.

"While politicians spend their money attacking each other, Charlie Brown is supporting returning veterans," an announcer says in the advertisement, which prominently features images of the now-retired Brown during his 26-year Air Force career juxtaposed with visuals of Brown and military veterans. "Find out about a man who knows that patriotism is more important than partisanship," the advertisement concludes.

The 1-minute advertisement, titled "Patriotism Before Partisanship", was premiered at a Thursday press conference that was attended by former U.S. Senator Max Cleland, who lost three limbs in Vietnam.

While McClintock and Ose have been slamming each other in attack advertisements, with Ose digging deeply into his personal wealth to fund his media offensive, Brown has been focusing on positive, military-centered issues like veterans care. The campaign is going so far as to redirect five percent of all campaign donations to veteran charities around the country.

"You can talk about all the things Ose and McClintock are talking about," said Brown spokesman Todd Stenhouse. "People are looking for something different."

"Charlie Brown doesn't care about Republican spin, he doesn't care about Democratic spin," said Brown adviser Eric Jaye, who is a veteran media and direct mail consultant. "He is who he is and there's no apologies and there's no lack of clarity."

Stenhouse did detail the size of the advertisement buy, but said it would be airing throughout the Sacramento media market.

Brown is running for the Roseville-area U.S. House seat after a narrow loss to Doolittle in 2006.
