Bilbray challenger proposes debate series

Nick Leibham, the Democratic opponent to first term U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray, is challenging Bilbray to a series of at least 5 debates before the November election.

“I write with a simple request: name the time and the place,” Leibham told Bilbray in a Monday letter.

Leibham concluded his letter, “I hope you would agree that the people of the 50th deserve no less. I look forward to your prompt response.”

Jennifer Jacobs, Bilbray’s campaign consultant, said she thought Leibham’s challenge was “fantastic.” But she said the congressman would only agree to radio and television debates. Those formats, she said, would allow the greatest voter access. She also said radio debates would enable Bilbray to participate from Washington.

“We are happy to do radio and television debates,” said Jacobs. “The congressman welcomes it. He loves being able to talk about his views.”

Alec Evans, Leibham’s campaign manager, scoffed when asked if his side would accept a radio and television-only format.

“Voters want to see candidates in the flesh. They don’t want candidates participating in local debates from Washington.”

Leibham, a San Diego attorney, is coming off a June 3 primary victory against Cheryl Ede. His campaign for Bilbray’s District 50 seat is seen as an uphill battle. April fundraising reports show Leibham with $181,000 in cash on hand, well short of Bilbray’s $453,119. The district also leans conservative, with George W. Bush winning 55 percent of the vote there in 2004.
