Kern County Democrats chair says Parra can't count on party support

California Assemblywoman Nicole Parra (D-Hanford) can't count on future support from Kern County Democrats, after she denounced them and supported a Republican running to replace her last Friday.

That's according to Candi Easter, Kern County Democrats chairwoman, who said Parra has turned her back on a party that supported her with energy and money in three elections.

"She doesn't have any party loyalty," Easter said Monday. "I don't think our committee would support her under any circumstances."

Parra, who is termed limited this year, is has filed a statement of intent to run for the state Senate seat held by rival Sen. Dean Florez (D-Shafter) when he is termed out in 2010.

Last Friday, Parra publicly denounced Florez, saying he'd worked against her in a past campaign, and Easter's group, for sending her letters criticizing Parra's lack of loyalty and public support, though not endorsement for Danny Gilmore, a Republican Assembly candidate in Parra's 30th Assembly District.

"Democrats should not be promoting or endorsing Republicans," Easter said. Gilmore is running against Democrat Fran Florez, mayor of Shafter and Dean Florez's mother, for Parra's seat.

Easter added that Democrats within Kern County had praised her open criticism of Parra, saying it should've happened sooner.

Parra has said she's considering changing party affiliation to no longer be a Democrat, but has yet to do so.

After Parra's Friday press conference, Florez issued a statement saying Parra's attacks were untrue and silly.
