California Republican leaders to push for prison overcrowding solutions

California State Senate and Assembly Republican leaders will have a press conference this morning to push their ideas for solving the state's prison overcrowding problems.

In a 10 a.m. press availability at the office of State Senate Minority Leader Dave Cogdill (R-Modesto), the GOP politicians will present a solution that is both comprehensive and fiscally responsible, according to a press advisory.

Cogdill will be joined by Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines (R-Fresno), Senate Republican Leader Emeritus Dick Ackerman (R-Irvine), Senate Republican Chairman George Runner (R-Antelope Valley), Assemblyman Todd Spitzer (R-Orange), Assemblyman John Benoit (R-Bermuda Dunes) and others.

California's prison system is under threat of a court-imposed inmate cap because of chronic overcrowding problems.

Related issues have already led to a court-appointed receiver's takeover of the prison's health care system.

Observers have said an inmate cap could lead to some prisoners being released early.

Among the proposals to curb the problem is transferring more prisoners from state prisons to county jails and out-of-state prisons to serve their sentences, and putting parole violators into drug treatment programs rather than back into prison.
