Bond for veterans added to November ballot

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has added a $900 million bond to buy homes for veterans to the November 4 ballot in California.

Schwarzenegger's office announced Tuesday that he'd signed S.B. 1572, by State Sen. Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad), which puts the bond on the ballot.

If approved by voters, $900 million in bonds would be available for the California Department of Veterans Affairs to fund the purchase of homes and farms for veterans under the CalVet Home Loan Program, without impacting the state's General Fund.

A press release from the governor's office estimated that the money could buy homes for thousands of recent veterans. The bond also changes the eligibility requirements for the CalVet program to allow veterans of post-Vietnam conflicts to participate.

The bond, which will be listed as Proposition 12, is one of four  bond-related measures on the November ballot and may be the last initiative that gets the okay to go before voters in this cycle.

The California Secretary of State's office has stated that today is the deadline for any legislative bond proposal to be approved for November's balloting.

Though Schwarzenegger, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and legislative Republican leaders also want a $9 million state water bond to be added to the ballot, legislative Democrats appear unwilling to bring that matter up for a vote.
