Brown attacks McClintock for campaign filing

Congressional candidate Charlie Brown leveled new criticism at opponent state Sen. Tom McClintock Wednesday, saying the Thousand Oaks Republican was running for the 4th Congressional District seat against Brown while also raising campaign cash for 2010 races in other seats.

Brown, a Roseville Democrat, pointed to a filing McClintock made Monday with the California Secretary of State's office for an account titled, "McClintock Committee 2010."

That filing shows that McClintock took donations into the account as late as early May, while he was engaged in a primary battle with former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose that he won on June 3. The two men were the top two Republicans seeking to replace embattled U.S. Rep. John Doolittle (R-Roseville) in the 4th district.

According to a summary sheet for McClintock Committee 2010, the account had an ending balance of about $119,000 at the end of June. However, there were no new donations to the account after May 9, when McClintock received $2,700 in contributions.

McClintock also has two active "statement of intent to run" accounts with the Secretary of State's office for a seat on the California Board of Equalization and Lieutenant Governor in 2010.

When previously questioned about the accounts, McClintock said he intended to close them and donate the funds to charity, but Brown pointed out in a press release that he has yet to do so.

"It's time for State Senator McClintock to level with the people in our community," Brown said in the press release. "What office are you running for?"

McClintock, who is termed out of his state Senate seat this year, has unsuccessfully sought positions as state controller, lieutenant governor and governor.
