Anti-redistricting group gets donation

After weeks of seeing big donations go toward a Nov. 4 ballot initiative that would reform California's methods for drawing political district, the anti-Proposition 11 side is raising some money of its own.

A group called Citizens for Accountability that opposes Proposition 11 reported receiving $25,000 Wednesday from Members Voice Of The State Building Trades, a union group.

Citizens for Accountability spokesman Paul Hefner said he hopes more groups will decide to donate, noting that the pro- Proposition 11 side continues to raise large funds from wealthy donors.

"While it will be hard to match the huge contributions from wealthy corporate CEOs and the Governor's campaign warchest, we will certainly work hard to be sure we have the resources we need to get our message out," Hefner said in an e-mail.

He noted that civil rights organizations and senior groups were also opposing Proposition 11. The measure is supported by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Common Cause.

If approved, the proposition would create an 11-member commission charged with drawing State Assembly, Senate and Board of Equalization districts after the 2010 U.S. Census. Congressional districts would still be drawn by the State Legislature.

All new districts would have to be drawn according to certain criteria that would encourage geographic continuity rather than inclusion of more voters from one particular party, a practice known as gerrymandering.

On the same day as Hefner's group reported its donation, groups formed to support Proposition 11 reported $105,000 in donations.
