DeLay to speak at GOP Riverside dinner

Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) will be the keynote speaker for the Riverside County Republican Party's annual Liberty Dinner on Oct. 4.

DeLay, who left office in 2006 after being indicted the previous year in connection with a campaign finance scandal, has since started a group that seeks to unite conservatives. He also provides frequent guest political commentary on TV and radio.

The party chairman in Riverside County said the county organization was thrilled to get a visit from a political figure of such stature.

"Tom DeLay is a great Republican and a great American," said Chairman Bob Richmond in a press release from the party. "Leader DeLay continues to advance our party principles and speak out on the issues that matter most to American families."

Several other top Republicans from Riverside County are scheduled to attend the dinner, including U.S. Reps. Mary Bono Mack, Ken Calvert and Darrell Issa. The event is at the Morongo Resort & Casino.

DeLay is still awaiting trial over two counts of conspiracy to violate election law, although a third count was dismissed. His seat in Texas is now held by a Democrat, Nick Lampson.
