DENVER - A radiant Michelle Obama took an already whipped up capacity-plus crowd of mostly women at the Sheraton Denver over the top during a speech Tuesday.
Speaking to an exuberant audience attending the Emily's List gala, the spouse of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama continued the process which she started during what has quickly become an acclaimed speech Monday night at Pepsi Center. Pundits most of Tuesday talking about the speech and effective it was in introducing her and her values to a wider national TV audience.
"Isn't this an extraordinary time for our nation," Obama asked. "Folks are talking about change and they're hungry for it. In two days we're going to make history when we nominate this guy I happen to be married to president of the United States."
Obama didn't have to really put on too much of a selling job to the audience which had been treated to a parade of Democratic female leaders including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"Barack Obama talks about the world as it is and the world as it should be," Obama said. "Our challenge is to narrow that and make the world as it is and the world as it should be one and the same."
Pelosi used most of her time to praise Clinton.
"She was just magnificent. She made us so proud. Our party and our country were greatly strengthened by her candidacy," Pelosi said. "This is a crucial election and I join with Hillary in putting out a clarion call for unity. We must elect Barack Obama as our next president."
For her part Clinton delivered an abbreviated speech during the gala, saying she had to leave quickly to make final preparations for her prime time speech Tuesday from the podium at Pepsi Center.
"John McCain will turn the clock back," Clinton said. "The choice facing women could not be clearer and the stakes could not be higher. I need you now to work as hard for Barack Obama as you did for me."
