Schwarzenegger lashes into state lawmakers for lack of action on budget crisis

PLACERVILLE - An angry and frustrated Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger severely criticized Golden State lawmakers Wednesday for the state's now 2½-month-long budget impasse.

The governor said members of the senate and assembly were lacking any sense of compromise on the spending plan all the while caring more about collecting their per diem, vacation time and attending the national political conventions than resolving the near-record setting budget crisis.

"I think it is very important for the California people to know that while the state is 2-1/2 months late on a budget, and while there are severe (consequences) to education and health care and hospitals and law enforcement and firefighting, there are absolutely no consequences for the legislators. Absolutely none," Schwarzenegger said during a speech at Marshall Medical Center.

"They go on vacation. They go on recess. They go home on the weekend and their two days off because God forbid for them to work on the weekend," Schwarzenegger added.

The governor begged the lawmakers to stay in Sacramento and pass his suggested budget -- a compromise spending blueprint that he submitted to the legislation last month.

Schwarzenegger promoted his budget plan - a plan that promises to generate $5 billion in new taxes, including a temporary 1-cent sales tax increase, $10 billion in cuts plus funds a "rainy day fund" to prevent future fiscal emergencies.

"We have seen already the Democrats introduce their budget. They're asking for a tax increase of $10 billion. That was voted down," Schwarzenegger said. "Then you have the Republicans who are now doing their budget even though it is 2-1/2 months late. And it relies on borrowing. That won't work and it will be voted down."

He then chided members of his own Republican party for wanting to borrow more money as a way of balancing the state's $15.2 billion deficit.

"It's like a family that has overextended itself on credit cards and then gets another credit card to pay off more credit cards," Schwarzenegger said.
