State firefighters oppose Proposition 7

The California State Firefighters Association came out against Proposition 7 last week, saying it had too many questions about how much oversight local government would have of new power plants approved under the measure.

According to a press release from the anti-Proposition 7 group Californians Against Another Costly Electric Scheme, association president Kevin Nida said local public safety groups would be stripped of their ability to review new plants under the measure.

"Cutting out local officials from the approval of high-voltage power plants poses a risk to local public safety," Nida said in the press release.

The group was also concerned that approving the measure would lead to higher electricity costs. That in turn could lead to less money for public safety, the group concluded.

Proposition 7, which is largely funded by a wealthy man from Arizona, would mandate that half of all electricity in California would be generated by alternative energy by 2025.

Large power companies such as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. have given most of the money opposing the measure, though some environmental groups have also raised concerns about its potential impacts. Both the state Democratic and Republican parties have opposed the measure as well.
