Field Poll suggests gubernatorial recall attempt may be DOA

An effort by California's prison guard union to recall Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger may be off to a bad start according to a Field Poll released Tuesday.

The survey of 1,008 registered voters found the recall - should it be qualified for the ballot -- to be opposed by a greater than two to one margin, 63 percent to 29 percent.

The poll also found that by a greater than four to one margin (77 percent to 17 percent) voters believe recalling Schwarzenegger would be a bad thing for the state, and just 17 percent say they would agree to sign a petition to remove him from office if asked.

The poll was conducted Sept. 5-14 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent.

A spokesman of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, the union sponsoring the recall attempt, did not return calls seeking comment on the survey on Tuesday.
