Lance Corcoran, the spokesman for the state prison guards union, was arrested Monday night by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Corcoran, 44, the voice behind the California Correctional Peace Officers Association's recently announced drive to recall Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, was taken into custody around 7:20 p.m., CHP Valley Division Chief Mike Champion told the Lodi News-Sentinel in this story.
Champion told the paper that a CHP patrol officer saw a stopped vehicle on Eight Mile Road west of West Lane. The division chief said the engine was running and the driver, later identified as Corcoran, was slumped over inside. Champion said Corcoran failed field sobriety tests at the scene.
After being booked Corcoran was released from the San Joaquin County Jail later Monday night.
The 30,000-member union, battling Schwarzenegger over wage and contract issues, announced its intention to recall the governor Sept. 8.
