Owner of signature-gathering firm charged with voter registration fraud

Mark Anthony Jacoby, owner of a signature-gathering firm hired by the California Republican Party, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of committing voter registration fraud.

Jacoby, who owns the firm Young Political Majors, was accused of lying about his home address in both 2006 and 2007 in order to register to vote in California. The arrest was the result of an investigation by the Secretary of State's Election Fraud Investigation Unit, which found that Jacoby twice registered to vote at the address of a childhood home in Los Angeles although he no longer lived there.

Jacoby's firm was hired by the California Republican Party to register voters throughout the state. Under state law, however, signature-gatherers must be either registered to vote in California or eligible to do so. Jacoby allegedly lied about his residence to meet this qualification.

"Voter registration fraud is a serious issue, which is why I vigorously investigate all allegations of elections fraud," said Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

Young Political Majors, which does work for Republican party units across the country, has been accused of duping voters in numerous states. Here in California, a number of voters have accused the firm of tricking them into changing their registration by having them sign what they believed were petitions for tougher penalties against child molesters, according to a Los Angeles Times report. However, the company has yet to be charged with a crime.
