Yee spokesman denies Jew's allegations in Chronicle column; Calls smears a desperate gambit to reduce jail time

Ed Jew, the former San Francisco supervisor who earlier this month pleaded guilty to federal political corruption charges, apparently told FBI investigators that state Sen. Leland Yee taught him how to be on the take within the tight-knit Chinese-American community in the city.

The charge was published Monday in this San Francisco Chronicle column.

In response, Yee spokesman Adam Keigwin told PolitickerCA.com that Jew's allegation amounted to the ramblings of a desperate man eager to try and reduce his jail time when he is sentenced early next year.

Moreover, Keigwin pointed out that it was Yee (D-San Francisco) who went to authorities early in the investigation to report the improprieties that he was hearing about the supervisor.

"There is absolutely no truth and no evidence to support what Mr. Jew has apparently said to authorities," Keigwin. "This is nothing but a desperate attempt to smear a dedicated public servant."

On Oct. 10, Jew pleaded guilty to federal and state charges that he engaged in mail fraud, extortion and soliciting a bribe in connection with what amounted to his shaking down the Chinese immigrant owners of an eight-unit tapioca shake chain for more than $84,000.

Jew, who resigned from office in January, is due to be sentenced next February and could be facing decades in federal prison, authorities said.

The disgraced former supervisor is also facing some nine state and local felony corruption charges. He is due in state superior court to face those charges this week.
