McClintock campaign: No offense intended on Prop. 8 comment

A spokesman for state Sen. Tom McClintock's (R-Thousand Oaks) congressional campaign said no offense was intended when McClintock used an animal analogy in his reasoning for backing Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage in the state constitution.

"I think that's a hard-fought campaign, and emotions are running high," said spokesman Bill George. "It's just an analogy, not a reflection on anyone's sexuality or choice of civil relationships."

No on 8 activists were incensed Tuesday when McClintock, a well-known solid conservative, quoted Abraham Lincoln in his reasoning when Lincoln said calling a tail on a dog a leg doesn't mean it's a leg, and calling a same-sex couple married doesn't make it a marriage.

Some activists felt McClintock was comparing gay relationships to dogs in the analogy.

McClintock again used the analogy in a Tuesday night candidates' forum with Democratic opponent Charlie Brown, though he added that he doesn't make judgments on homosexuality. The two men were asked how they would vote on Proposition 8.

However, in the same answer, McClintock said a breakdown in the moral fabric and the covenant of marriage had led to other problems, such as a rise in out-of-wedlock children. It was not clear if he meant to include gay marriage as part of that trend.
