Anti-11 forces criticize governor's fundraising trip to Florida

Opponents of redistricting measure Proposition 11 raised the specter of another state with well-known screwy elections Wednesday, in criticizing 11 backer Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for going to Florida to raise money for the ballot measure.

A press release from anti-11 group Citizens for Accountability documents that Schwarzenegger raised $590,000 on a tour there late last week, including thousands from major donors to such prominent Republicans as President George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Group spokesman Paul Hefner said in the release, making reference to recent polls that show the measure trailing, "They're about as interested in this confusing, complicated and unfair initiative as they are in four more years of George Bush."

A spokeswoman for the pro-11 campaign said the suggestion that Florida would have an impact on the ballot measure here was  a laughable attempt by the anti-11 group.

"Frankly, this is nothing but another missive from the opponents of reform trying to deflect attention from the fact that their campaign is nothing but an attempt by politicians and special interests who want to see the status quo continue in Sacramento," said Molly Weedn, of Yes on 11.

She pointed out that the measure has support from both Democrats such as former state Controller Steve Westly and Republicans like Schwarzenegger, as well as independent groups such as the state League of Women Voters.
