Pelosi turns the heat on members, but response is quiet

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) can tighten the screws on her members, but it doesn't always work - even amongst members of her own California caucus.

Earlier this week, Pelosi sent an e-mail to her Democratic caucus identifying some 30 members who have been tardy in paying their dues to the party's House camapaign arm this cycle.

The message was loud and clear: Badger away.

"Enclosed, please find a list of our colleagues who have only fulfilled 50 percent or less of their dues obligations," Pelosi and her fellow Democratic House leaders wrote in the e-mail. "Please encourage them to be a part of the team. The number of seats we gain will depend on the resources we have to compete in these closing days."

The letter explained that, while House Democrats found themselves in a strong position just two weeks to Election Day, "we cannot take anything for granted."

But at week's end just a few of those tardy members had paid up, according to a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee dues sheet obtained by PolitickerCA.com. And none of the three Golden State Democrats on the list gave a dime of their campaign funds to the party's coffers this week.

U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma), a co-chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, owes $150,000 to the DCCC but has given $60,000. U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Norwalk), who has $234,000 in her campaign bank account, has given $50,000 of the $150,000 she owes. U.S. Rep. Joe Baca (D-Rialto) has given $25,000 of the $200,000 he is expected to pay.

Of the 32 members on the tardy list, just five have ponied up this week: U.S. Reps. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D), Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Mike Michaud (D-Maine), (D-Tenn.), and Jim McDermott (D-Wash.)

A Pelosi spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Even with a few misbehaving students, the DCCC has been flush with cash all cycle long and currently holds a $24 million cash edge over the National Republican Congressional Committee.
