Hannah-Beth Jackson, Democratic candidate for the 19th state Senate District, has released a new mailer that uses humor and cartoon imagery to debunk Republican Tony Strickland's attacks.
On the comic-book cover of the mailer, a woman expresses shock at a paper's headline, "Hannah-Beth Jackson kidnaps Elvis!!" The inside of the flier explains how "Tony Strickland has been making some pretty wild charges about Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson." Another illustration shows a man reading a newspaper with the ridiculous headline, "Jackson voted to tax puppies!"
For the most part, Strickland has tried to paint Jackson as left-wing partisan who will support taxes on everything and anything and wants to weaken Proposition 13.
"Hannah-Beth Jackson did not vote to weaken Prop 13," reads the mailer. She did, however, vote "for billions in tax cuts for middle-class families." The mail piece also tries to disqualify Strickland's favorite nickname for Jackson, "Taxin' Jackson," by discrediting the source, the Santa Barbara News Press.
The Jackson campaign has made humor a hallmark of both their mailers and their TV ads. Earlier this month, Jackson went on the air with an ad called "Tony Strickland and friends" that featured cartoon characters of cigarettes, gas pumps and medical equipment to try to illustrate Strickland's ties to special interests.
