FPPC says IE spending topped $22 million this year

The most recent spate of independent expenditures in state legislative races pushed the total over $10 million for the general election, according to the state's Fair Political Practices Commission.

That's in addition to $12 million spent in the primary election earlier this year. Six races, including three Assembly races in Northern California, each had more than $1 million in independent expenditures this fall.

Assembly District 15, with more than $1.78 million in IEs, led all races in Northern California, with AD 30 ($1.2 million) and AD 10 ($1.4 million) also on the list.

Opportunity PAC, a group largely funded by unions, led the list of IE committees in expenditures with $1.7 million. It was followed by Californians for Jobs and Education, which is mostly backed by the state Chamber of Commerce and spent about $1.44 million.

Independent expenditures continued over the last weekend of the election, though significantly slowed from late October.

Service Employees International Union Local 1000 Candidate PAC spent $11,186 on staff time Saturday to back Democrat Joan Buchanan in AD 15. Buchanan also loaned her own campaign $20,981.

In AD 10, Democrat Alyson Huber saw late IE support from the Committee for Working Families - CA Labor Federation, which spent $65,280 on field expenses Saturday, and the SEIU Local 1000 PAC, which spent $47,528 on staff expenses and time Saturday.

Huber's opponent, Lodi Republican Jack Sieglock, loaned his campaign $46,600 over the weekend.

The SEIU Local 1000 PAC also spent $529 Saturday in Assembly District 30, on staff expenses and time to support Democrat Fran Florez against Republican Danny Gilmore.
