Bowen: Voter turnout high, few problems reported

SECRETARY OF STATE'S OFFICE, SACRAMENTO - Early voting turnout was strong in California, but it's still too early to know if a record will be set, according to chief elections officer Debra Bowen.

"We don't know right now where turnout will be," Bowen said in a press briefing Tuesday, but then added, "This is a big one."

As of 11 a.m., the Secretary of State's office had taken about 6,400 calls from state voters with election questions and complaints, according to officials with Bowen's office.

Of that, the vast majority were calls from voters who weren't sure where to vote, whether they were registered or were worried about a misplaced mail ballot, officials said. Only about 100 to that point had to do with actual complaints, mostly over someone politicking at a site.

There were reports of power failures in Los Angeles County, but since that county uses an ink-based system for voting, one official said, a failure was unlikely to cause dramatic problems.

Registration hit an all-time high of more than 16 million for the election, but Bowen and other election officials stayed away from predicting that such high registration would lead to a record turnout.

Bowen was unconcerned that turnout would drop off late in the day if the presidential election appeared to be decided before polls closed in California at 8 p.m.

"It's a historical election, and people don't want to say to their grandchildren someday, ‘Yes, it was historic, but I didn't want to get out of my chair after they called it for a president,'" she said.

She also said her office encouraged people to vote either in late morning or in mid afternoon, to beat expected rushes before work, at lunchtime and after work.
