AP calls CA-45 for Mary Bono Mack; campaigns say no election day votes counted

The Associated Press has called the 45th Congressional District for Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs), despite the fact that no election day votes have been counted, according to Republican and Democrat campaigns in Riverside County.

The latest totals reported by the Riverside County Registrar of Voters show Bono Mack leading Democratic challenger Julie Bornstein by about 10,000 votes. However, there have only been 65,701 votes counted, and only early votes, at that. Both Bornstein's camp and the campaign of Republican Gary Jeandron, who's running for the 78th Assembly District in Riverside and Imperial counties, report that the Riverside County Registrar's office has yet to count any election day ballots.

"Right now the only votes that have been reported are about half of the early voting ballots, which is probably less than 20 percent of the total that's going to be cast in this election," Bornstein campaign manager Walter Ludwig said. "They have not reported a single ballot that was cast on election day. They're showing a total of 66,000 votes, while we're expecting about 270,000 votes to be cast."
