Buchanan hopes to help on state budget

Assemblywoman-elect Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) said she's focusing on putting together her legislative team after winning the hotly contested 15th Assembly District Tuesday.

Buchanan, who said she'd received a concession call from Republican opponent Abram Wilson on Wednesday morning, said the 52.9-47.1 victory could be attributed to a strong campaign in all areas.

"I had a great campaign manager, great fundraising, a great consultant, a great field operation," she said.

As one of the few Assembly seats both parties believed they could win, AD 15 took a negative tone during the campaign's last weeks, with Buchanan criticized for her stance on the peripheral canal, and Wilson attacked over both the disclaimer on his campaign commercials and his votes as mayor of San Ramon.

Buchanan said she was disappointed the campaign went that way, but was happy that she stuck to a campaign plan and approach that voters ultimately backed.

In Sacramento, Buchanan said she'll take an interest in issues related to health care and water, though the state's budget is the issue that supersedes all right now.

"We can't do anything without balancing the checkbook," she said.
