Assemblyman Jones to make 2010 run for Insurance Commissioner

Media outlets reported Thursday that final-term Assemblyman Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) will make a bid for state insurance commissioner in 2010.

Current commissioner Steve Poizner, a Republican, is planning a run for governor that year.

Jones could not be reached for comment Thursday evening, but told The Sacramento Bee that he already had endorsements from Democrat state Controller John Chiang and incoming state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento).

Jones was elected to his third term in the state Assembly last week, and is term limited out in 2010.

He was the Assembly Judiciary Committee chair in the most recent legislative session, and served on the Sacramento City Council before being elected to state office in 2004.

Two Sacramento City Council members, Lauren Hammond and Kevin McCarty, are expected to run for Jones' Ninth Assembly District seat in 2010.
