McNerney's name hits Internet as possible Obama pick for Secretary of Energy

Although it's only been days since the voters of California's 11th Congressional District reelected him to his second term in office, U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney's name is floating around the Internet as a possible pick as the next Secretary of Energy.

Although he doesn't yet have a seat on the House Energy Committee, McNerney is arguably Congress' most experienced and knowledgeable member on the subject. Prior to being elected for his first term in 2006, McNerney, who holds a doctorate in mathematics, earned a living as a wind energy scientist and engineer.

McNerney spokesman Andy Stone told PolitickerCA.com that his boss has not been contacted by President-elect Barack Obama or any of his representatives about the idea.

However, Stone said that if asked by the president-elect, the 57-year-old Pleasanton Democrat would give the request serious consideration.

"Congressman McNerney would of course be deeply honored to serve and would consider any request the president-elect makes of him," Stone said. "Of course, he considers it a distinct privilege to represent the residents of California's 11th district as a member of Congress."
