The community that elected Kevin Johnson as the next mayor of Sacramento - and the first who's an African-American - is invited to a "swearing-in" event next Tuesday.
Johnson and others will speak at the "Together We Can" event at Sacramento's historic Memorial Auditorium, which will also host live entertainment and nonprofit groups as part of the celebration.
Mayoral transition team member Adam Mendelsohn said the emphasis will be less on appreciating what Johnson did in his mayoral election victory and more on what he'll need to do to address the city's problems.
"This was always intended to be a community-wide event to talk about the kind of change that Sacramento needs," Mendelsohn said.
It won't be a formal swearing-in to office, however. The Sacramento Bee reported Tuesday that the vote count necessary to make Johnson's win over incumbent Mayor Heather Fargo likely won't be official until after Johnson's event.
More likely, Johnson will be sworn into office in early December, before a scheduled Sacramento City Council meeting.
Mendelsohn said that's not what the event was focused on anyhow.
Attendees, who can register with a Web site established by Johnson's transition team, will be encouraged to bring a can of food for the needy, Mendelsohn said.
He also said a planned list of speakers is not finalized, though TV journalist and Sacramento native Lisa Ling is scheduled to be the event's master of ceremonies.
"What he talks about doing hasn't changed from Day 1," Mendelsohn said. "This is really Day 1 for implementing that change."
As Johnson has begun learning more about the city during the transition process, Mendelsohn added, he's also learned that the problems facing the city, such as crime and job development, will take everyone's input to solve.
"He wants the entire community to come together and meet those challenges," Mendelsohn said.
