Lawmakers push Thompson for Interior Department head

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) is being touted by two other Bay Area representatives as a possible U.S. Secretary of the Interior under President-elect Barack Obama, according to the Associated Press.

The story published Thursday evening said that U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) and George Miller (D-Martinez) sent a letter to Obama transition team members that suggested Thompson be considered for the role.

According to the story, the letter highlighted Thompson's background as a hunter and winemaker as well as his ongoing advocacy for salmon restoration efforts on Northern California rivers.

Conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited are also backing Thompson for the post, according to the story.

The story said that Thompson was flattered by the letter, but had not been contacted by the incoming Obama administration.

Elected to the 1st Congressional District in 1998, Thompson is part of the Blue Dog Caucus of moderate and conservative Democrats.
