SAN FRANCISCO - The political derby to become the next chair of the California Democratic Party commenced in earnest this week.
While legendary former California lawmaker John Burton is the odds-on favorite to replace current CDP Chairman Art Torres, he is not alone.
Labor lobbyist and CDP state First Vice Chair Alexandra Rooker has been in the hunt since early summer. Joining her is Eric Bauman, who is the chairman of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
This week Burton, 75, announced that in addition to the virtual who's who of prominent California Democrats who are supporting him, the 30,000-strong California Professional Firefighters union also endorsed him. The support of the firefighters follows the endorsement of six major building and trade unions.
The intra-party election will take place next April at the party's annual convention in Sacramento. At that time, Torres, a well known former state senator, will step down as chairman after 11 years in the post.
