SANTA ANA -- Peggy Haidl, sister of former Orange County Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl, testified this week in the corruption trial of former Sheriff Mike Carona that she made illegal campaign contributions to U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Anaheim) at the behest of a top Carona assistant.
In 2000, Haidl said, then-Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo asked her to make a personal contribution to Feinstein, which was later reimbursed by her brother, Don, the Orange County Register reported on Tuesday. Haidl also said Jaramillo asked her to get others to do the same, though she couldn't remember their names.
Gil Duran, a spokesman for Feinstein, said Wednesday that the allegations would be investigated.
"This is the first we've heard of it, and we're taking a look at it," Duran told PolitickerCA.com.
Paula Negrete, Sanchez's communications director, said, "We have no record of Peggy Haidl contributing to the congresswoman's campaign."
