Nunez's son out after bail amount halved

After a judge cut his bail amount in half, the son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez (D-Los Angeles) was released Tuesday on bail related to a murder charge against him, according to media reports.

Esteban Nuñez, 19, was released from San Diego Central Jail Tuesday evening with a bail amount of $1 million. A judge originally set the amount at $2 million in his initial court hearing last week.

Nuñez and three other co-defendants are each charged with one count of murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of vandalism, in connection with the San Diego stabbing death in October of a 22-year-old college student, Luis Santos of Concord.

Fabian Nuñez, who was termed out of his Assembly seat earlier this month, has largely declined to comment on the matter, other than to say in a statement last week that he believes in the criminal justice system and he's confident his son will be found innocent.

Esteban Nuñez was arrested last week at his father's home in Elk Grove.
