Denham's in for 2010 lieutenant governor's race

State Sen. Jeff Denham (R-Merced) formally announced a bid Thursday for lieutenant governor in 2010, and in doing received the endorsement of three other potential competitors for the Republican nomination.

Denham, who is termed out of his 12th Senate District seat in two years, said in a statement released by his campaign that he would focus on improving the state's regulatory environment for businesses, selling properties the state owns needlessly, and curb perks for top officials at the cash-strapped University of California system.

"I've consistently opposed tax increases as burdensome to California's businesses and unfair to taxpayers when there is still so much wasteful spending by state government," Denham said in the statement. "And I've always sided with law enforcement and crime victims over criminal offenders.
"My priorities, my experience and my record are a perfect fit for the responsibilities of the Lt. Governor's office."

An accompanying endorsement list included many top state Republican officials, including Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines (R-Clovis) and Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill (R-Modesto).

Also notable on the list were former state Sen. Jim Battin (R-La Quinta), former Assemblyman George Plescia (R-San Diego) and U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield).

All three men at one time opened campaign accounts to run for lieutenant governor in 2010, but apparently passed up the opportunity and endorsed Denham instead.

Notably missing from the list was state Sen. Sam Aanestad (R-Grass Valley), who also has an active account to run for lieutenant governor in two years.

The Denham campaign said Denham has over $1 million in an account for the race.

Denham, considered a moderate in some circles, had his profile rise considerably this year after then-State Senate pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) engineered a recall attempt against him over Denham's vote against a state budget in 2007.

The recall was resoundingly rejected, and Denham's visibility rose across the state as a symbol of opposition to Perata's liberal policies.

Another state senator termed out in 2010, Sen. Dean Florez (D-Shafter), is so far the only Democrat to seek the lieutenant governor seat in two years. Current Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, a Democrat, has announced plans to run for governor.
