Shawn Steel, one of three Republican National Committee members from California, is looking for a "superstar" to be the face of the party as the next RNC chair.

"I'm looking for a superstar that can go on T.V. or radio and put a couple of sentences together and make an effective, immediate presence, not somebody who has to be trained and tested," Steel, who will vote for the next RNC chair in January, told PolitickerCA.com.

While experience in front of the camera is important, it is hardly the only requirement, Steel said.

"I'm looking for somebody that's willing to sweep and clean out the RNC and clean up the Republican national image, who's not afraid to articulate conservative views that will appeal to the public," Steel, a former chairman of the California Republican Party, said. "And I want somebody who knows where the money is, not somebody who's going to have to be trained, but who literally knows what's going on in South Florida, New York and Los Angeles."

Steel said he was impressed by the strong field of candidates. Though he has yet to decide who to support, Steel knows he will not be voting for current Chairman Mike Duncan, who officially declared his intention to run for re-election Wednesday.

"I'm desperate for bold new change and a bold new Republican National Committee," Steel said. "Change means new leadership. We need a new RNC chairman."

With Democrats moving into the White House, Steel explained, the next RNC chairman will serve as the face and voice of the party for at least the next few years.

"Mike Duncan, as pleasant a person as he is, is the most anonymous chairman in the last 50 years," Steel, who was an architect of the recall effort that drove former Gov. Gray Davis from office, said. "Most Republican leaders don't know who Mike Duncan is. They never heard him on the radio, they never watched him on T.V. He is the great unknown."

Steel was very impressed with RNC chair candidate Michael Steele, former Maryland Sec. of State and a frequent Fox News contributor.

"Steele certainly fits the criteria," he said. "He's a superstar, he's a regular on T.V. He's been in some very hostile environments, such as Bill Maher's show, and he comes up fighting with dignity and optimism."

There are numerous other qualified candidates, Steel said, including Michigan GOP Chair Saul Anuzis, South Carolina GOP Chair Katon Dawson and former Ohio Sec. of State Ken Blackwell.

"All four of these guys have been tested, they're articulate, they're fundraisers and they fit the bill," Steel said.

Steel said he will take his time making a decision.

"This is the most important decision that any RNC member's going to make for the next several years," Steel said. "We're at a nadir, the bottom of the heap with the House, the Senate and the presidency. We need to do some serious brand changing or we could be in a very long cycle. I'd like the cycle to be two years with an exciting return. I don't want to wait 20 years."

Steel is joined on the RNC by fellow committeewoman Linda Ackerman and California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring. The RNC will elect a new chair on Jan. 21.
