The Skinny

It’s not just the Assemblymembers and Senators that get caught in the term-limits shuffle. Increasingly, staff is on the move both inside and outside the Building. Former Leland Yee chief of staff Janelle Beland has taken over as Senate Democratic Caucus Director, replacing Suzanne Wierbinski, who held the job under pro tem Don Perata. Rabinsky has moved to the pro tem’s policy shop. Meanwhile, Perata’s policy hatchet man Michael Miiller is working at the Banking, Finance and Insurance Committee. And longtime Senate Judiciary Committee consultant Gene Wong has also been swallowed into the pro tem vortex. Wong is now chief counsel to the pro tem. Filling his seat at Judish is Saskia Kim, former deputy director of the Senate Office of Research.

Legislators optimistic as state budget woes loom over swearing-in

STATE CAPITOL - For at least a few hours, Republicans and Democrats alike exchanged well wishes and paused to acknowledge the significance of elected office, with swearing-in ceremonies in both the state Senate and Assembly chambers Monday.

Before the formal swearing in of 24 new Assembly members and 11 new state Senators, family members and friends crowded the chamber floors, while the new and returning politicians made acquaintances with fellows on both sides of the aisle.

Huber campaign not celebrating AD-10 win yet

A spokesman for the campaign for Democratic Assembly candidate Alyson Huber said the mood was cautiously optimistic after Huber took the vote-count lead in AD-10 late Tuesday from Republican Jack Sieglock.

"It's been a long process," said spokesman Andrew Acosta. "But I think it's better to be up at this point."

Huber, an attorney from El Dorado Hills, had a 506-vote lead over Lodi businessman and former elected official Sieglock as of 11:33 a.m. Wednesday.

Huber takes lead in AD-10, McClintock lead grows in CA-04

Democrat Alyson Huber took the lead for the first time Tuesday in the 10th Assembly District race, up by 531 votes over Republican Jack Sieglock as of 7:06 p.m.

That gave her a percentage of 46.7 percent to 46.4 percent for Sieglock. Provisional ballots in Sacramento County, where Huber is from, apparently changed the calculus in the race.

It was unclear Tuesday how many votes remained to be counted in Sacramento or San Joaquin County, home to Sieglock's base in Lodi.

Brown closes to less than 400 votes of McClintock's lead

Democrat Charlie Brown closed to within 329 votes of Republican Tom McClintock Friday in the ongoing ballot count for the 4th Congressional District race.

Brown, from Roseville, was as close to McClintock's lead as he'd been since Election Day, and an e-mail to campaign supporters said that provisional ballots from Nevada County deserved the credit.

Huber trails by 1,000 in AD-10, no change in CA-04 vote totals

Jack Sieglock's lead in the 10th Assembly District race rose to 1,007 votes Thursday, though the percentages did not change between him and Democrat Alyson Huber.

Sieglock, a Republican from Lodi, had 46.9 percent of the vote and 84,314 votes to 46.3 percent of the vote and 83,307 votes for Huber, an attorney from El Dorado Hills.

The race, which had plenty of donations from both state parties as well as outside independent expenditures, was the only outstanding state Assembly race where the candidates were split by less than two percentage points.

Huber still trailing Seiglock in AD-10 vote count

The two candidates in Assembly District 10 were separated by 1,007 votes Wednesday, with Republican Jack Sieglock remaining in the lead with 46.9 percent of the vote to 46.3 percent of the vote for Democrat Alyson Huber.

Though thousands of ballots remained to be counted in that race early last week, it was not clear Wednesday how many ballots were still outstanding.

Elections officials appeared to have counted only a few hundred ballots since Monday, when Sieglock led by 946 votes over Huber, and both had lower overall vote totals.

Sieglock lead up to 946 votes on Huber in AD-10

Republican Jack Sieglock's 10th Assembly District lead held steady Monday evening, up by 946 votes over Democrat Alyson Huber.

As of 5:42 p.m. on Monday, the California Secretary of State's Web site had Sieglock with 84,175 votes and 46.9 percent of the vote and Huber with 83,229 votes and 46.3 percent of the vote.

The percentages in that race have largely been unchanged over the last week, though many ballots still have to be counted in the district, which includes parts of El Dorado, Sacramento and San Joaquin counties and all of Amador County.
