What if Harvard or UC Davis did not exist as brick and mortar education sites--would anybody notice or care? Would it make a difference?

The purpose of education is to educate, not to socialize, playing football or teach future film makers.
If you want to play sports, let the sports provide the venue to train, teach and play. If you want to learn film making, let Hollywood provide the technical training facilities--it is not up to the poor to create another Spielberg.
