The options for Dems pining for a new face in governor's race

Could Jackie beat the old pseudo-idealist or the young reckless womanizer? Maybe. Last month, I opined that Antonio Villaraigosa's exit from the 2010 Democratic gubernatorial price created an opening for another big-name Dem, given Jerry Brown's and Gavin Newsom's...

With Villaraigosa out, more likely than ever another big Dem will jump in

I know, I know -- who would want to be California's governor at a time like this? Nevertheless, Antonio Villaraigosa's departure from the gov's race makes it more likely than ever that another big-name Democrat will jump in. I can't...

Circling the drain

The LAT's election team reports on the governor's last-ditch effort to convince voters to vote Yes tomorrow . " Battling anger and indifference on the part of California voters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored them Sunday not to make the state "the poster child for dysfunction" by defeating a host of measures on Tuesday's ballot that seek to restructure the state's bleak finances.

"The governor's visits to three African American churches in Los Angeles came as proponents and opponents of the ballot measures marshaled the last of the millions of dollars they have collected for the special election. Schwarzenegger said Sunday he had been told that about 25% of voters are expected to show up, a paltry percentage that underscores the difficulty of the quest for reliable voters.

CA-Gov: Way-Too-Early-Field-Isn't-Even-Set Poll Coverage!

Two polls were actually released today on the 2010 California Governor's race.  The Field Poll did an extensive poll of the race, including favorability ratings, and Lake Research, a Democratic firm, did their own poll which included some head-to-head matchups.

Field's poll included Dianne Feinstein and I don't think the results were all that great for her.  In the primary she polls well under 50%, compared to earlier polls which had her closer to that number.

Dianne Feinstein: 38%
Jerry Brown: 16%
Antonio Villaraigosa: 16%
Gavin Newsom: 10%
John Garamendi: 4%
Steve Westly: 2%
Bill Lockyer: 1%
Jack O'Connell: 1%
Undecided: 12%

Considering she's the most well-known figure in California politics, and that there won't be that many competitors in the final field, that's not a runaway at all.

Those numbers are for the hypothetical match-ups 460 days from now. Capitol Alert has the exclusive statistical tabulations.

Villaraigosa supporters accused of money laundering

Two Florida businessmen who planned to seek lucrative concession contracts from Los Angeles International Airport for their gift shop business were charged today with conspiring to launder nearly $40,000 in political donations to Antonio Villaraigosa's 2005 mayoral campaign, authorities said.

Los Angeles County prosecutors alleged in court documents that Sean Anderson and Richard W. Manhire -- executives at Miami-based Travel Traders LLC -- donated the money in the names of at least two dozen employees and their associates between September 2004 and April 2005.

City campaign finance records show that the first donations were made a day after Villaraigosa had dinner with Anderson on Sept.

Villaraigosa wins! (And other LA election results)

No surprise here: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa coasted to reelection on Tuesday, grabbing 55 percent of the vote in the latest tally by the county clerk.

His closest challenger, Walter Moore, had 26 percent of the vote.

Measure B, a key plank of Villaraigosa's renewable energy platform, was deadlocked as of this morning, but slightly behind:

In the city attorney race, Council Jack Weiss won a five-person race by 10 percentage points. He'll be in a runoff on May 19 with Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich

Councilwoman Wendy Greul coasted into the controller's post, avoiding a runoff with more than 65 percent of the vote.

Zimmer leads in L.A. Unified returns

The financial backing of the teachers union made two candidates favorites to win in Tuesday's contested races for the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, but early Wednesday morning one race was too close to call.

In District 4, which covers most of the Westside and reaches into Hollywood and the southwest San Fernando Valley, Marshall High teacher Steve Zimmer had a comfortable lead over Fairfax High teacher Mike Stryer. United Teachers Los Angeles spent more than $287,000 in support of Zimmer, swamping other funding.

In District 6, covering the eastern San Fernando Valley, the union spent nearly $29,000 for San Fernando City Councilwoman Nury Martinez, according to the most recent filings.

Villaraigosa reelected; Greuel leads

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa secured a second four-year term in Tuesday's election. But one of his closest allies, Councilman Jack Weiss, was headed for a May 19 runoff in the contest for city attorney.

With about half of the votes counted, Villaraigosa avoided a runoff against the second-place candidate, attorney Walter Moore. The mayor had been expected to secure the needed majority, given that he had appeared in television commercials for himself and two other campaigns -- and had outspent Moore by a ratio of 15 to 1.

Taking the stage shortly before 11 p.m. at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel downtown, Villaraigosa was greeted with a short burst of applause.
