CA-48: Could Beth Krom Beat John Galt?

Last week, OC Progressive (which has really attracted a good group of writers and provided a vital progressive voice in Orange County) revealed that Beth Krom, an Irvine City Councilwoman, is considering a run against Rep. John Campbell.  In a subsequent post, Joe Shaw explained why Krom would make a worthy challenger.
She can win elections.
Beth Krom has won five campaigns, In 2006, she garnered 60% of the vote in her re-election as Mayor and in 2008, won her current City Council seat with 8000 votes more than the next candidate.

She gets things done.
We need elected officials who have experience getting things done for their constituents.

More news outside of the budget

• Despite a week's worth of rain in Southern California, Los Angeles is still unsustainably dry, and the Department of Water and Power is contemplating water rationing for the first time in two decades.  Homes and businesses will be charged double for "excessive" water use.  I'm not sure this will work, as you don't see the meter running in the shower.

• In response to the shooting of Oscar Grant, Asm. Ammiano and Sen. Yee have introduced legislation to create a civillian oversight body. AB 312 should create some accountability where there was no formal structure in the past.

Campaign News!

Aren't you excited that, with nearly two years until the next election, here I am offering campaign news?

Except there are two significant developments today in California of which you should be aware.

First, Jerry Brown is throwing his hat in the ring to be California's governor for a second time.  He hasn't formally announced, but this interview signals that he will.

It was 1974 when Jerry Brown ran for governor as a dashing 36-year-old reformer, the embodiment of change in Watergate's aftermath.

"I was the new spirit," Brown recalled. "That was my slogan."

No one would mistake Brown for a new spirit today. At 70, he occupies a prime spot among the elders of California politics.

Durston to challenge Lungren again in 2010

After making two unsuccessful tries at knocking off incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River), Democrat Bill Durston said he plans on making a third bid in 2010.

Noting how his support in the 3rd Congressional District race improved between 2006 and 2008 - from 37.9 percent to 43.8 - Durston said he believes Lungren could be vulnerable in two years.

McClintock confident he'll come out ahead in CD 04

State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks), leading by about 400 votes over Democrat Charlie Brown, expressed confidence Wednesday that the final tally of ballots will send him to Congress as the representative for the 4th Congressional District.

"I am gratified and thankful that my campaign emerged after election night with the lead," McClintock said in a statement issued to the media. "I have full confidence in the hard-working and dedicated election officials who are counting the remaining absentee and provisional votes."

Durston campaign reaching out to new voters late

Energy was high in the final hours of Bill Durston's uphill push to take the 3rd Congressional District from U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River).

Durston campaign spokesperson Pat McConahay said her election office was besieged by volunteers Tuesday who wanted to make get-out-the-vote calls for the Democrat.

"We're also calling brand-new voters out here, letting them know that they need to support not just Obama, but the local candidate Bill Durston," she said.

Lungren campaign focused on Republican turnout

U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) will be in good shape tonight as long as his party's members come out big, said campaign spokesman Tim Clark.

"If we match the Democrats, we'll be doing just fine," Clark said of the incumbent, who's being challenged by Democrat Bill Durston.

Clark said party turnout is important as a contingency against trends elsewhere that a campaign can't control.

That's true whether the national trend is in John McCain or Barack Obama's favor in the presidential race, he said.

Rothenberg makes CA-04 a toss-up

Another report on hot political races around the country has bumped the 4th Congressional District race into the "toss-up" category.

The Rothenberg Political Report switched the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. John Doolittle (R-Roseville) to a toss-up on Sunday morning.

In the last month, that race has moved from lean Republican to tilt Republican/toss-up to its current status on Rothenberg's report. The Cook Political Report also labeled the race a toss-up in recent weeks.
